I nominate myself for the position of Secretary of the Libertarian
National Committee.
As you all know, I have long felt that the national Party would benefit
from giving me a full voice at the table. That is the reason I ran for
At Large, and while I did not win that race my feelings on the matter
have not weakened. In fact, the more LNC meetings I have participated
in, the stronger my convictions have become. The time is right, the
position is right, and I am right for the job.
Here is a summary of my political chronology and experience in the Party:
* From May 2011 to the present, I have been a Regional Alternate on
the LNC. I am the Chair of the Headquarters Building Committee,
since March 2012 when I proposed its formation. I was a member of
the Employment Policy and Compensation Committee from August 2011
until May 2012.
* From May 2012 to November 2012, I was Massachusetts Director for
the Gary Johnson (NM) Presidential campaign. I ran a successful
drive to put Gov. Johnson and Judge Gray on the Massachusetts
ballot. I personally contributed $5000 to this ballot access drive.
* From October 2007 to the present, I have been a member of the State
Committee of the Libertarian Association of Massachusetts (LAMA),
the MA affiliate of the LP.
o From October 2008 to the present, I have been LAMA Chair.
o From October 2007 to October 2008, I was the LAMA Newsletter
Editor.
o I was the state delegation chair to the Libertarian National
Conventions in 2010 and 2012.
* From January 2005 to May 2007, I was a member of the Libertarian
Party of Chicago.
As to my qualifications, I am a current member of the Libertarian
National Committee. I have the most recent experience of any candidate
that has declared so far. I know the people involved, their positions
on various issues, and the interpersonal dynamic. I am non-factional, so
I am a good consensus choice.
I know what is expected of LNC members, and I will fully commit to all
of the financial, legal, and ethical responsibilities of the position.
I have never missed an LNC meeting since I was elected to serve. I have
re-read the LNC bylaws and the Policy Manual, and reviewed RONR in the
course of making my decision to run for this office. I understand and
commit to performing the duties of the Secretary in a timely and
effective manner. I will make the office run so smoothly that we can
forget about it and focus on the business of the party.
I am the best candidate in part because I have a strong technical
background. I have a dual BS in mathematics and computer science from
Caltech, and I was a professional software developer / architect for six
years starting in 1998. I intend to leverage those skills. For
example, I will sequentially number each mail ballot, so that LNC
members can unambiguously reference which ballot they are voting on. I
will bring other efficiencies to the office of Secretary so that draft
minutes can be posted quickly for approval, mail ballots are announced
as soon as they have enough co-sponsors, and vote tallies are promptly
posted.
I will make a great Secretary because I am an attorney admitted to the
bars of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the United States Patent
and Trademark Office. I have studied election law, and taken continuing
legal education on the topics of election administration, campaign
finance laws, and lobbying. I believe my input on these issues as a
full voting member will be valuable to the LNC and the efficient running
of the Party. I think both strategically and tactically, but I am also
not afraid to get my hands dirty with grassroots activism.
Finally, I am efficient and organized. I know how to handle my time.
As an attorney, I routinely handle a load of over 100 simultaneous
matters (not all of them requiring my immediate attention, thank
goodness!). As another example of my organizational skills, at the 2012
National Convention in Las Vegas I prepared the main seating chart for
the floor every day, based on the changing delegate allocations. I will
keep the office of the Secretary similarly well-organized. I also excel
at delegating responsibility. As leader of the Massachusetts affiliate,
I have brought on over a dozen activists to take leadership positions in
part to grow the party, but also in part to relieve myself of some
day-to-day work and free up my time and skills for other pursuits.
I am the best candidate for the job. I hope you will keep an open mind
and vote for me. If you have already pledged to vote for another
candidate, I hope you will reconsider in view of the fact that the
period for nominations is still open, and there is still time for a
better choice to come along. I am that better choice.
Thank you for your kind consideration.
