Dear colleagues:
I hope all is well with you. I am writing to provide some
information for your consideration. I hope you find it helpful.
1) On Saturday (March 9) I had the honor of addressing the European
Students For Liberty conference in Leuven, Belgium. In my opinion the
conference was a great success; if I understand correctly, at least 350
people (from at least 44 countries) attended the event. I believe you
would have been delighted to see so many bright, talented young
libertarians.
2) I am scheduled to arrive in the Chicago area on Friday morning. In
order to catch my flight on Sunday evening, I must depart from the hotel
on Sunday no later than 4:30 p.m. CDT.
3) On March 9 David Blau sent a message to the LNC-Discuss list in
which he distributed his report as secretary; in addition; his message
included five Word files containing draft minutes of Executive Committee
meetings and one Word file containing the draft minutes of the November
LNC meeting. Unfortunately, the Word files he distributed (and to which
he referred in the first item of the secretary's report) were neither
prepared nor sent by me. Rather, these items were prepared and sent by
Ruth Bennett.
I believe each of the draft minutes distributed in that message
either contains at least one error or there is an issue about which a
nontrivial question of accuracy can be raised. Thus, in my opinion none
of those drafts can be approved without amendment. Moreover, I believe
the language of some of those drafts can be improved in various places
with respect to both clarity and readability.
In a separate message I shall send you revisions I prepared of the
draft EC meeting minutes and the draft minutes of the July 2012 and
November 2012 LNC meetings. Allow me to suggest that we use these
revisions as the basis for further consideration.
I request that those who attended the EC meetings review these
revisions carefully. In particular, those who attended a meeting should
determine whether their attendance is properly noted. Also, no vote is
listed for Dan Wiener on the motion recorded in the draft minutes of the
July 2 meeting.
Both of the draft LNC meeting minutes will require careful review,
as I am uncertain about the accuracy of some items in the drafts. (The
revisions contain comments in red text concerning these items.) Also,
the revisions I prepared do not contain the reports presented to the
LNC. (Evidently I do not have some of the reports; in addition,
including the reports in my possession would have increased
substantially the size of the files.) The official versions of the
minutes should contain these reports.
Incidentally, as far as I can tell, draft minutes of the May 31,
2012 meeting of the Executive Committee have not been circulated. I
contacted Ms. Bennett about this matter several weeks ago, but have not
received a response from her. Frankly, I don't recall whether the
teleconference constituted a formal EC meeting; the main topic discussed
during the teleconference concerned information about Robyn Aalders and
the Johnson campaign.
As always, thanks for your work for liberty. I look forward to
seeing you at the meeting.
Take care,
Jim
