[Lnc-business] Applications for the position of LNC secretary

Dear colleagues:

I hope all is well with you. I am aware that there are different
schools of interpretation as to what "midnight" means. As I suggested in
my message to the LNC Business list on Dec. 16, the convention I follow
implies that midnight on Jan. 24 should be interpreted as 12:00 a.m. (or
immediately thereafter) on Jan. 24. As you may recall, in that message I
also suggested that henceforth closing dates be stated in terms of a.m.
or p.m., and that terms such as "midnight" not be used.

However, it is fine with me if the LNC wishes to adopt the
convention suggested by Mr. Wrights concerning the application period.
Indeed, I believe it would be appropriate for us to accept applications
received today precisely because of the ambiguity concerning the
deadline in the announcement of the position. In any event, should I
receive any additional applications for the position of secretary, I
shall send them to the LNC as soon as I am able to do so. (It is likely
I shall not be able to send such applications before 1:00 a.m. EST
tomorrow.)

Allow me to request again that all closing dates be stated in terms
that do not use ambiguous terms such as "midnight." Incidentally, I did
not see the announcement concerning the application process for the
position of secretary prior to its distribution; if I had, I would have
recommended a deadline such as 11:59 p.m. EST on Jan. 23 or Jan. 24.

As always, thanks for your work for liberty. I look forward to
seeing you at the LNC meeting in March, if not before.

     Take care,
     Jim
