I also vote no on this motion. Norm's arguments below are persuasive, particularly in regards to airfare being the main expense of attending LNC meetings, and meeting for only one day after everyone has already incurred these travel expenses therefore meaning we're not getting our money's worth from expending these funds. While I am mindful that a single day meeting could potentially save the party some money, we have not seen the numbers on this, and in any case, meeting at a less expensive venue such as Brett Pojunis has offered to obtain for us can accomplish the same purpose without sacrificing any meeting time.

The best long-term solution would probably be to conduct most LNC meetings by teleconference, as numerous members have suggested, but as long as we continue to travel to meet face-to-face we might as well make the most of these opportunities. While it's good to be mindful of the "law" of work expanding to fill the time allotted to it, it seems to me that there is a pretty strong awareness on the committee of the need to use our time efficiently and keep things moving. For instance there have been good suggestions about minimizing the meeting time spent on reports which we already have in writing. If oral presentation of reports is limited to subject matter not in the accompanying written report, and to fielding questions in response to the materials presented, this could save a fair chunk of time. On a similar note, I'll thank Geoff for keeping track during our last gathering of how much meeting time we spent thanking people -- I suspect that greater awareness of this common board phenomenon helped keep it to a minimum (it occurred to me to thank him during the meeting, but I did not do so for obvious reasons!) :-)

Love & Liberty,

The meeting following, proposed for November, will clearly be consumed by building and convention business. After November 2013, we will all be lame ducks. Thus, this term’s LNC (2012-2014) is likely to produce less than the “do nothing” LNC that got thrown out by the last convention.

Not taking advantage of having a second day available for some substantial new business (project funding, affiliate support, web site improvement, taking full advantage of social media, headquarters organization and preparedness, etc.) is irresponsible.
