The recent action of staff to combine our two email groups into one was the smallest possible change that would execute our decision to provide transparency. I commend those responsible. (note, this commendation is personal, and does not require a vote of the LNC)
It appears to me that it was not quite in accordance with the text of the passed motion but seems to be consistent with its intentions. Unfortunately, it is having the unintended consequences leaving us with orphaned motions like this one and a loss of clarity in sorting the messages.
I would suggest that 2014-09 be withdrawn and replaced with a new motion, if they still want those or similar refinements to the new combined email list. As it stands now, -09 attempts to modify a list that no longer exists.
We can restore our ease in separating endless discussion from important voting related messages if we voluntarily put "vote" and/or "discussion" at the beginning of the subject line.
I am delighted to see how well our email process is functioning, even as we continually reinvent the wheels of our vehicle while underway. I have never participated in a more effective yet less painful meeting of a national organization in more than half a century of involvement in politics.
Imagine if we were in convention, the Wicked Witch of the Wes had the floor and was delivering a three page long colorful and fiery tirade while you stood at microphone 4 waiting to be recognized to let the body know that the building was on fire (started, no doubt, by a misplaced flaming finger)
With our current meeting process, if my eyes begin to glaze over, I can hit the next arrow and finish reading the post later or never. If I want the floor, I just hit send on my computer or smartphone, knowing that all of you have the same option to read my post now, later, or never.
I suspect that, if we make careful speculations as to what procedures might work and then hold a few trial video meetings, we might find that new technologies make our lives easier. If we don't like the results, we can discontinue the video meetings as the enabling legislation made them possible but not required.
I can envision a future where all LNC business takes place online and we get together face to face occasional in a parking lot or bar, to get to know each other. A few ideas sketched on bar napkins might come out of such a meeting, but no business would be required.
