I have very strong opinions about the way the media and the USDOJ have
handled the shooting of Michael Brown.
However - I don't have strong feelings about whether or not the LP should
issue a press release on this matter.
The facts are very sketchy, and will probably be released very slowly over
the next few weeks and months.
I don't see any benefit to the LP issuing a press release - is there really
a libertarian issue at stake here? Are we going to argue that there was de
facto racism in the Ferguson Police Department because the percentage of
African-American officers did not reflect the percentage of
African-Americans in the town at large? Are we going to argue that the
police officer who did the shooting overreacted, even though we have no
factual basis to make that claim?
It is quite possible the officer who shot Mr. Brown committed second degree
murder. It is also quite possible that the officer killed Brown in
self-defense.
If the LP does issue a press release, I hope that:
a. it is heavy on sympathy for the victim's family
b. criticizes the residents who are using this tragedy as an excuse to
loot local businesses and criticizes outsiders who have flocked to Ferguson
for their own selfish political or financial reasons
c. asks that everyone calm down until many more facts about the
shooting are released to the general public

"An official release is coming out soon.

"Any thoughts on the appropriate LP response to the Ferguson riots?
Anonymous has stepped in - I think the largest liberty-based organization in
the country should probably weigh in, but I'm not sure how.
