A newspaper article isn't going to help anyone make a sound
determination why an active member of the party leaves. We had a similar
situation occur some years back in Missouri when, after working for the
Barr campaign, a high profile member of the Missouri LP chose to become
a republican.
In our case, the member was showered with kindness and praise for his
views and his accomplishments by republican operatives. They made his
switch a high profile event and the member enjoyed a moment of great
self-importance. Within a few weeks, however, republican operatives had
dropped any and all talk of "libertarian ideals and smaller government"
that our member had brought to their party.
Sadly, no one in Missouri hears from our former member. Establishment
republicans lined up strongly in favor of Mitt Romney in 2012 and
offered no room for dissent from those with libertarian leanings.
