Dear colleagues:
I hope all is well with you. I greatly appreciate Mr. Sarwark
soliciting feedback concerning this matter before submitting a motion
for our consideration. Allow me to share with you some comments about
this matter; I hope you find them helpful.
1) The weekend of Nov. 14-15 is very bad for me, as I have been invited
to deliver an address to the European Students For Liberty conference in
Copenhagen, Denmark on Nov. 14. In addition, since we shall consider
the 2016 budget during this meeting, I believe it would be better for us
to hold the meeting on Dec. 12-13 (or if necessary Dec. 5-6), as we
would have more information at our disposal in preparing the budget.
As a related point, the Executive Committee is responsible for
preparing the draft budget for consideration in advance of the LNC
meeting. Holding our fall meeting on Nov. 14-15 would likely require
the EC to prepare the draft budget in later October. At least two EC
members (Bill Redpath and I) will be very busy in October, as elections
for the Virginia General Assembly take place in November. (Mr. Redpath
and I serve as chair and vice chair, respectively, of the Libertarian
Party of Virginia.)
2) A few minutes ago I visited the Rosen Centre website to check on
room rates for Nov. 13-15 and for Dec. 11-13. I was surprised to
observe that the rate for a "deluxe double room" was $194.00 for both
Nov. 13 and Nov. 14, whereas the rate for the same room on Dec. 11 and
Dec. 12 was $173.00.
While the fact that rates on the website for a Nov. 14-15 meeting
are higher than rates for a Dec. 12-13 meeting doesn't imply the Rosen
Centre will give us the same room rates for the two meeting dates, it
suggests to me that we should make additional inquiries concerning rates
for a Dec. 12-13 meeting (and a Dec. 5-6 meeting) before any motion is
considered. Frankly, I would be very surprised if the Rosen Centre is
unwilling to give us the same rate for a Dec. 12-13 meeting as long as
rooms and meeting space are available.
3) I believe there is an additional benefit to holding the LNC meeting
on Dec. 12-13 that we should consider. Specifically, the anniversary of
the founding of the LP takes place on Dec. 11. Perhaps we could hold a
Libertarian Party celebration/fundraiser on the evening of Friday, Dec.
11 at the hotel. Indeed, assuming that there are no FEC (or State of
Florida) problems, we may be able to conduct a joint LP/LP Florida/LP
local Orlando organization celebration that evening. In any event, we
may be able to organize some type of celebration at the hotel that
provides an additional incentive for the hotel to give us a favorable
rate for a Dec. 12-13 meeting.
As always, thanks for your work for liberty; as always, thanks for
considering my comments. I look forward to seeing you next month.
Take care,
Jim
