In regards to eventually winning elections, my effort in North Dakota has been to push the Libertarian brand name instead of just a candidate. So, when I run a radio ad for an office, it mostly is pushing the theme of Less Government and More Freedom, and just off handedly mentions voting for the candidate. I also get the discounted candidate rate that way. I also try to network with other organization such a pro-choice women's groups that are mostly left in the cold by the major parties. My idea is to slowly convince the voters to vote for the Libertarian candidate, no matter who he is. Just like the majors can depend on a core block of supporters to vote the party line just because their great grandfather did and regardless how stupid and worthless their candidate is.
I figure once you have that core block of voters, you are on your way to running serious candidates.
The idea seems to be working, and in the last 10 years we have grown from 2% to 6.3% of the statewide vote, and 3.5% of the voters will actually admit in poles to being a Libertarian (compared to 18% Democratic and 25% Republican).
The big test will of course will be in 2016. If it doesn't pan out next year, I will hang up the towel and retire.
