[Lnc-business] Kevin Ludlow and new LP.org web site

Today the LNC adopted a motion regarding a new website for LP.org, and
that effort is to be headed up by LNC board member Kevin Ludlow.

I mentioned some things that I thought ought to be known to the
committee before they voted on it. I would have liked to have been
permitted more time for this, but in any case, I think I got the most
important things out there.

1. I wrote a $10,000 check from the Libertarian Booster PAC to Kevin
Ludlow's 2014 campaign for Texas State Representative.

2. Conflicts can arise when a board member has a contract with the LNC.
There may be conflicts between LPHQ staff and the new website effort,
and so it's going to be important to be aware of that so the Chair and
LNC stay engaged and can provide guidance when any conflicts arise.
Staff will work to facilitate the new website effort.

3. Mr. Ludlow is involved with the a caucus working to affect LNC
elections at the upcoming national convention. I think by definition
every elected LNC member is involved in LNC elections, so it's not an
out of the ordinary situation, but Mr. Ludlow needs to be careful not to
try to use the new website to promote one candidate for the LNC over
another.

4. The chair and staff need top level access and control to all accounts
related to the new webiste. I don't expect problems, but I think there
have been projects in the past that didn't go well that might have been
abandoned and the LNC needs to have the ability to salvage anything just
in case.

5. We recently adopted a new logo, and Mr. Ludlow should use that in any
graphic design.

6. I believe the funding approved for this is unlimited, but I don't
have the language of the motion that passed in front of me. If Mr.
Ludlow is allowed to spend as much as he is able to raise, then in
theory (not likely), but just theoretically we could focus all future
fundraising efforts for the website and the $20,000 number mentioned
could go far beyond that. I would have preferred a cap on the funding.

7. I urge Mr. Ludlow to insist that contracts he offers to developers
include clauses requiring the designers to provide source files, such as
Adobe Illustrator or Adobe Photoshop files, for graphic items, so staff
can update them in the future without having to start from scratch.

8. I think almost everyone thinks LP.org needs to be improved, and I'm
excited about the possibility Mr. Ludlow brings to the table and look
forward to working with him to help bring a new website online.

I may think of a few more things to add to my comments later, but those
were the main things the LNC needs to keep in mind as we move forward. I
hope we have a new web site done before the Orlando Convention.

I'd like to thank the work Lauren Daugherty and Denise Luckey did to
build a nationbuilder website libertarian.nationbuilder.com for the 2016
convention. NationBuilder is what the I.T. Committee had recommended as
a platform. We'll continue to use that website for the 2016 convention.
I urge Mr. Ludlow not to restrict his efforts to the nationbuilder platform.

Thanks,
--
