FYI should you get any inquiries regarding William Weld on guns, see his
clarifying statement posted below. This is in response to an earlier
comment he made that raised concerns for some in the gun community.
On a related note, here's some info on Gary Johnson v. Donald Trump on guns:
Trump once supported a ban on assault weapons and a longer waiting period
to buy a gun. In 2012, he tweeted that President Barack Obama had "spoken
for me and every American" in his remarks at a vigil for the Newtown school
shooting victims. He now says he's pro-Second Amendment.
Trump suggested in a tweet that he wants to discuss banning gun sales to
those on the terrorist watch lists, a proposal Johnson opposes because some
names may erroneously appear on them.
Trump has said mentally ill people should not have guns.
Gary Johnson has consistently advocated for gun rights. The exception is he
says he's open to a discussion about how to keep guns out of the hands of
the mentally ill, but also showed hesitancy to support a law on this. He
notes that it carries the dangerous potential for the government to declare
someone to be mentally ill who is not, thus infringing on their right to
keep and bear arms.
Overall, Gary Johnson has been far more consistently pro-gun than Donald
Trump.
