Gene,

Thank you for writing and bringing your concerns and those of the supporters of this proposed resolution including the Cherokee County (South Carolina) LP to the Libertarian National Committee. Although I was a supporter of Darryl Perry's campaign for the Libertarian Party's presidential nomination at our convention, I agree that this subsequent presidential write-in campaign was ill-advised, and that it should be dropped – indeed I have already personally urged Darryl to abandon it, and reiterate that request again now (I've copied him on this message).

While I believe the motives of Perry and those who support his write-in campaign are libertarian and well-intentioned – we on the LNC have received numerous messages over the past weeks urging that we censure one or both members of our presidential ticket or even dump them entirely, over concerns with a number of un-libertarian statements that have come from the Johnson/Weld campaign – I nevertheless think a write-in presidential campaign at this point does us more harm than good, and that there are better ways to respond to a duly nominated LP presidential ticket going off the rails in ideological terms.

That being said, I do not think we can reasonably condemn this write-in campaign without also condemning the divergences of our presidential ticket from the LP's platform which gave rise to it. In addition to those divergences over issues such as Gary Johnson not upholding freedom of association and Bill Weld not unequivocally supporting the right to keep and bear arms, calling for the hiring of 1,000 new FBI agents, etc. (those are just the issues I recall off the top of my head), it is my understanding that the write-in campaign was also partially provoked by Weld donating $450, including $200 as recently as last month, to the New Hampshire gubernatorial campaign of Chris Sununu, the establishment Republican opponent of the Libertarian candidate nominated for New Hampshire governor, LP state representative Max Abramson (see e.g. https://www.bostonglobe.com/news/politics/2016/09/22/libertarian-for-life-donates-gop-candidate/24GPl5Aaa0AOXWpQeFeKgI/story.html ).

Would you and the co-sponsors of your resolution be willing to add language condemning the departures of our presidential ticket from the Libertarian Party's platform, and the contributions by vice presidential nominee Bill Weld to a Republican opponent of a duly nominated Libertarian candidate for governor? If the resolution is amended in this manner so as to take a fair and balanced approach to the overall situation, and the write-in campaign is not meanwhile dropped, I would be willing to introduce the amended resolution. I encourage you to consult with your co-sponsors and let us know. Thank you again for articulating your concerns, and for your longstanding activism on behalf of the Libertarian Party.

Love & Liberty,
                                  ((( starchild )))

> Recently, failed LP presidential candidate Darryl W. Perry announced a vanity write-in campaign for President of the United States, which is in conflict with the duly nominated ticket of Gary Johnson and Bill Weld. His write-in campaign has qualified in seventeen states. In the face of unprecedented voter education, media exposure, and fundraising for the Libertarian Party thanks to Johnson/Weld, Mr. Perry has decided to reject the 55.8% of Libertarian delegates who chose Gary Johnson and Bill Weld as our candidates. Make no mistake: his action is hostile to our presidential ticket and hostile to the delegates.

He is acting as a representative of the party, yet working against the party he represents. A strong, unwavering response is warranted. Attached is a copy of the proposed resolution I authored for your consideration.

> The Libertarian Party is America's third major party. This is our new reality. The time of coddling and encouraging obstructionist cranks within the party has come to an end. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of any successful organization to hold members and leadership accountable -- for the good and bad. It is in the spirit of accountability and party unity that this proposed resolution is presented to you. Whether you choose to act upon this resolution or instead take a different path to address this situation, the hope is that our toleration for divisiveness and destructive actions within the LP will end. In my line of employment, "internal culture" is a mantra we live and die by. Poisonous and self-defeating attitudes can not only prevent an organization from thriving, but help hasten its demise.
