[Lnc-business] Winning the Presidency.

Hi Sam,

Thank you for writing to members of the Libertarian National Committee. Please know however, that we neither nominate the party's presidential candidates, nor plan the campaign's strategy. The Libertarian presidential ticket is chosen by hundreds of Libertarian Party members voting as delegates at our national conventions. Anyone who joins the Libertarian Party and signs the party's Non-Aggression Pledge is eligible to become a delegate and participate in that process.

Once our candidates are nominated, their campaign strategy is essentially up to them, and financial support from the party comes mainly in the form of helping them get on the ballot in as many states as possible – a by no means insignificant contribution, as you can see by the fact that Gary Johnson is the only presidential candidate besides Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump whose supporters have managed to get him on the ballots of voters in all 50 states this year. Of course we could choose to throw additional money toward the presidential campaign, but our resources are limited and there are many down-ticket candidates and other expenses to consider which might offer more bang for the buck. Certainly we appreciate, and I'm sure the Johnson campaign appreciates, the crucial assistance that individual supporters like yourself have given to help fill the gap between existing budgets and what we'd like to be able to do.

I know the campaign has made an effort to target New Mexico, as well as other western states like Utah and Colorado where polling numbers have been strong, and they are certainly aware of the electoral college considerations. The Libertarian Party does have an active organization there – the New Mexico LP's website, which is linked from our national site, is http://www.lpnm.us/ – and I expect the campaign has a state coordinator and other people on the ground there. While I don't know why Johnson is holding a rally in Georgia, I can imagine several possible valid reasons. It may have been planned in conjunction with a fundraising or media opportunity, or scheduled previously when the situation was different. Or it is always possible someone simply made a bad decision – personally I agree with you that targeting New Mexico in particular at this point would appear to make good sense.

One thing I've noticed working on Ron Paul's campaigns though is that local grassroots activism in support of a candidate can often be more effective than TV advertising or other centrally planned efforts from headquarters. If you feel New Mexico represents the best opportunity for investing resources in the final days of the election, you may be able to help out even if you don't live in the state and can't travel there, by making phone calls to registered voters there, sending them brochures, etc., if you are so inclined. The Johnson/Weld website does have a volunteer page with some options – https://www.johnsonweld.com/volunteer – and New Mexico LP leaders may also be able to help you get plugged in if you contact them. And don't forget those local candidates and ballot measures where you may have more of a chance to make a difference than in the national election. Whatever you decide to do, thank you for choosing freedom and the Libertarian Party!

Love & Liberty,
                                    ((( starchild )))
