I think it could be doable with a little imagination, and cheaper and a lot more fun, plus we could really doing some interesting networking with other libertarians. Roland

As an alternative to what we are doing, and have been doing, for an off-year national convention I find this idea interesting. However, I believe there should be major change in the way we approach an off-year (non-presidential) convention. Our habit is to have a four day convention which costs individual delegates about $500 a day to attend. We then spend two of those days tinkering with the platform and by-laws. I doubt anyone would disagree with the statement “Our lack of political success is in no way or degree due to flaws or deficiencies in our bylaws or platform.” Yet, assuming 500 delegates, we extract some $250,000 from the bank accounts of Libertarian activists to enable such tinkering. Furthermore, an important and essential activity of an off-year convention, election of officers to manage the party in a presidential election year, is deferred to the final hours and is usually curtailed through “suspension of the rules” (i.e. temporarily ignore our immaculate bylaws) to accomplish the task in emergency fashion before a quorum is lost. In addition to electing our officers, I believe that our off year conventions should emphasize the building the political effectiveness of our affiliates and especially the organization of state party affiliates at the county level. The Libertarian Expo put on by the Nevada LP was an excellent event which demonstrated what can be accomplished. There were wonderful speakers to share their experience and energize the troops, but the emphasis was on training. How to build organizations, how to achieve political significance, how to build a bench of via candidates, etc. Even more important, we should be arranging our conventions so as to attract young people, especially students. I have always been in favor of the Memorial Day weekend as it is likely that at this time students have finished finals and have not started their summer activities (travel, jobs, internships, etc.) as yet. It is also important to keep the cost low in three areas: the convention fee, travel costs, and accommodation costs; to enable attendance by students and other young adults whose pockets are rather shallow. The LNC has always followed the policy that conventions had to pay for themselves. Some former LNC members have even suggested conventions should generate a profit. I suggest that we should be considering actually allocating resources to fund conventions such that more folk, especially younger folk are more likely to attend with the idea that a significant portion of them could become effective activists. May I suggest that the age demographic of the party membership is a very significant, if not the most significant, factor in our future success. I believe that it is the young people who have not yet established a long term affiliation with a particular political faction that remain our most fertile market for members and, more importantly, activists. We would derive significantly more benefit from the expense and effort required to put on an off-year convention if the above points of emphasis were implemented. If we are to continue having conventions whose primary function is to tinker with the bylaws and platform, I’m all for doing it on a cruise ship. However, our lack of political success is _NOT_ due to flaws or deficiencies in our bylaws or platform. We should recognize that. Subject: [Lnc-business] 2018 Convention As indicated before, I have looked into the remote possibility of doing a cruise convention in 2018. Below is the response I received from Carnival Cruise, and I pass on just for their information and pondering.Roland Riemers ND----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Good morning Roland,
Yes, you are correct. I did mean "ship as a hotel" not the other way around.
I apologize if there was any confusion.
Carnival is happy to accommodate large groups of up to 50% of the stateroom capacity of
the ship. Our vessels currently serving the short market (3-5 days) would be able to
accommodate a large group of 500 -650 rooms/ 1,000- 1350 guests depending on the ship.
For groups over 50% of the vessel, we do require a full ship charter.
Meeting space is complimentary and confirmed around the normal activities and use of the
ship. A full day in the main showroom (if you need space for 1,000 attendees) may be
challenging for us, as we have activities and shows in that lounge throughout the day
for guests. The second largest lounge space on the ship seats approximately 400-450.
Of course, a full ship charter would alleviate meeting space issues as you would have
full reign of the activities, schedules and lounge space on board.
Full Ship Charters require an irrevocable bank letter of credit at the time of contract
for the full amount of the cruise, including all taxes & gratuities. This is completely
non-refundable once a contract has been signed. In addition, we require a guarantee of
Onboard Revenue in order to assure that the sailing would meet normal revenue for the
charter. This is somewhat similar to F & B minimums that hotels would require.
All of our ships visit international ports as required by law. (The Jones Act).
Is there a travel agency that handles your reservations and planning or do you have your
own event team that will handle all of that?
Roland, I will be out of the office until January 19th. I am copying Jenny Halligan and
Bari Block our Charter Directors. If you have additional questions, please reply to
all and one of us will respond as quickly as possible.
We appreciate the opportunity to present Carnival for your convention.
Regards,
Ann
