Look at the Republican and Democrats, no matter what you think of their candidates, the whole process they are using is attention getting (way to much so in fact). Our system is BOORING. So, we not only need to weed out the frivoelus candidates, we need to jazz up the whole process to get even a slight amount of public interest in the process. For eliminating the complete cooks, requiring 200 members (or say 4 state chairmen) to sign on is achievable and would not take more then a few hours of staff time to verify from our computer list. And as we don't have a lot of presidential candidates chopping at the bit, I would guess the whole process would only take one day of staff time.
How to dress up the process is more of a challenge, and I am not sure what would be media grabbing. Maybe the candidates jousting on horseback or swimming a mile in shark infested water or living a week on a deserted island? Or maybe turning them loose with a clipboard and requiring them to personally obtain 1,000 valid ballot petition signatures in a major town - with news crews filming their efforts? I am sure we could come up with some creative and interesting ideas. The main question we need to answer is are the candidates serious, healthy, mentally fit, and represent the ideas of the Libertarian Party.
In any case, the time to start and test out some creative ideas is now, as we will have forgotten this whole discussion 4 years from now.
