[Lnc-business] GOP Takeover

Sam,
As a general precautionary measure I always try to wear my tinfoil hat
under my wig. Nonetheless, I'm not seriously worried that a takeover
effort against the LP would succeed. First, you couldn't hide such an
attempt; too many people would be involved all over the country. Second,
GOP establishment politicians are not likely to be any more competent at
hijacking the LP than they have been at stopping The Donald. Third, there
are myriad and convoluted defenses in place which would make any takeover
extremely difficult. For example, in California (which would be the
biggest prize with the most national convention delegates for any takeover
conspiracy) you have to have been a dues-paid state member for 90 days
prior to the (April 1st) state convention in order to be a delegate to that
convention. And only state delegates can elect national delegates. There
are additional hoops in that election process, such as the ability to
down-vote potential national delegates.
Nonetheless, I think you've hit on a great marketing tool to hype
attendance at state conventions and the national convention. We can warn
LP members about the rumors of a Republican takeover, and thus urge them to
attend the conventions to make sure that it doesn't happen. Fear and
paranoia can be powerful motivating forces, and I have no compunctions
about using them.

*"In general, we look for a new law by the following process. First, we
guess it (audience laughter), no, don’t laugh, that’s the truth. Then we
compute the consequences of the guess, to see what, if this is right, if
this law we guess is right, to see what it would imply and then we compare
the computation results to nature or we say compare to experiment or
experience, compare it directly with observations to see if it works. If it
disagrees with experiment, it’s WRONG. In that simple statement is the key
to science. It doesn’t make any difference how beautiful your guess is, it
doesn’t matter how smart you are, who made the guess, or what his name is.
If it disagrees with experiment, it’s wrong. That’s all there is to it.”*
