Jordan,

Thanks for writing, and for your work on behalf of a Libertarian candidate for Congress. Running for office is only half the work; without dedicated support staff like yourself, our candidates are much less effective. From what you say, it sounds like Chris plans to run an active campaign with lots of volunteer help, and that's great. What my colleague Sam Goldstein said is basically the lay of the land, however. The national LP has limited funds, and unfortunately can't give as much support to campaigns as we would like.

In addition to the points Sam mentioned, equally important when requesting funding is to let us know your candidate's commitment to libertarianism and the Libertarian Party, and his/her positions on the issues:

• Does he or she understand the Non-Aggression Principle and faithfully apply it to policy positions?

• Are his or her campaign priorities identifiably libertarian, promoting both civil liberties and economic freedom, or does s/he come across more like a conventional candidate running with one of the establishment cartel parties (e.g. a low-tax conservative)?

• Does s/he plan to run on strongly libertarian issues, and make specific, actionable promises to the voters detailing what s/he plans to do in support of freedom if elected? (e.g. "If elected to Congress, I promise to introduce legislation to eliminate the Department of Homeland Security and end warrentless government spying on the phone calls, emails, and other communications of Americans.")

• Will s/he promote and defend the party platform, and if s/he has any positions that differ from those of the platform, make it clear that they are personal stances and not the position of the Libertarian Party?

• Will s/he be visible in publicly identifying as a Libertarian on his/her campaign materials, at public appearances, and so on, and generally seek to help increase our visibility and build the party and the larger movement for freedom of which we are a part?

These are the kind of questions that some of us are likely to consider when making tough choices about which campaigns are most deserving of scarce material support from the LNC. Anyway, thanks again for your efforts, and please don't hesitate to get in touch any time.

You and other Libertarians can also sign up for the LNC reflector email list, or read the email archives of the list online at http://hq.lp.org/pipermail/lnc-business_hq.lp.org/ in order to keep track of what your elected party leadership is discussing and doing, and hold us accountable.

Love & Liberty,
                                   ((( starchild )))

I have attached a proposal that I wish for all of you to take a look at and consider as this is a rare opportunity that I believe the Libertarian Party as a whole can capitalize on. I look forward to hearing your response and thank you for your time!
