[Lnc-business] MOTION: Re: adding emails and phones to LNC committee page

Caryn Ann,

I'm open to other ideas on how to uphold transparency and make sure folks are reachable, or failing that, to make it clear that the responsibility for non-transparent practices lies with the individual in question and not the Libertarian Party.

One alternative would be to have calls for members not wishing to list a phone number routed through staff or other committee members or members of the party leadership, but of course this would take extra time from those individuals.

I am personally willing to volunteer my time to field calls myself on behalf of committee members – perhaps all such calls, depending on what the volume turned out to be like – and then call the committee member in question so that they can return party members' calls from a blocked number. Members could also list a phone number on which they just let all calls go to voicemail and return them later rather than answering directly. Such solutions are obviously sub-optimal however.

While I sympathize with anyone who has a stalker or is being harrassed, it seems to me that being to some extent a public figure is part of the territory of holding a party leadership position, and that if they aren't comfortable with people contacting them for whatever reason, they would do best to avoid such positions. The alternative is having people making decisions on behalf of the LP without members being able to interact with them about those decisions, and I don't think that is desirable. It seems to me that failing to uphold or even strongly encourage transparency on the basis of these rare cases would be kind of like censoring the entire Internet so that no one runs the risk of encountering offensive material.

Love & Liberty,

Some of our volunteers may have specific situations (perhaps they have a stalker ?) that may have another reason to not have it listed. Or some female volunteers just don't want their phone number listed...

If a member does not have a phone number or email address listed at which he or she can be contacted by party members, it is because the individual chose not to provide that information.
