[Lnc-business] FW: Ebke Request

Forwarding to LNC business list:

If Mr. O’Donnell’s point about a $5,000 limit on LP contributions to non-federal candidates is correct, that would eliminate the possibility of the additional $10,000 contribution to Senator Ebke’s campaign in late October, as suggested by Jeremy Jensen, Laura’s campaign manager. See discussion in email chain below.

I suggest proceeding immediately with my original $5,000 pre-primary contribution motion. The Nebraska primary takes place on May 15th.

I further suggest that we consider separately at the upcoming Denver LNC meeting, Mr. Jensen’s request for an additional $2,500 for internal LNC/staff post-primary support for Senator Ebke’s campaign. At the discretion of the LNC and staff, the $2,500 additional internal support, as suggested Mr. Jensen, could be used for hand-written postcards to Nebraska District 32 Libertarians. The postcards message could not only solicit their votes but, more important, emphasize that now is the time for them to volunteer to staff and lead campaign teams in support of an all-important Libertarian candidate that has worked hard to represent their District 32 interests in the legislature despite the personal vendetta by the standing Governor of Nebraska and his support for Senator Ebke’s opponent.

The bulk of the hand-written postcard expense would be postage. Mr. Jensen could provide the postcards in lieu of using personal stationary. Nebraska Libertarians have produced an amazing number of hand-written postcards printed by Mr. Jensen (Cutthroat Print) that will be mailed shortly to a broader range of voters in District 32 to boost Senator Ebke’s top-two non-partisan primary results and position her for running a hard campaign and WINNING a re-election victory in November.

Let us all work together to make Senator Ebke the first state senator elected as a Libertarian, an inspiring milestone in our quest for freedom.

Thank you, Elizabeth.

I met with Jeremy Jensen, Laura’s campaign manager, this afternoon in Omaha. Jeremy recommended that a $5,000 would be best for now (as soon as possible) to characterize Laura’s campaign as funded by small grass-roots donors in contrast with her opponent’s much larger contributions from well-heeled patrons, including his well-known political sponsor. After the primary, Jeremy suggests that $2,500 be approved by the LNC for use at the discretion of Wes for handwritten postcards or notes to be mailed just to Libertarians in Laura’s district. Those Libertarians could make the difference and could be tapped as volunteers for Laura’s post-primary campaign. If the LP does not already have the District 32 Libertarian list, Jeremy can provide the list, sample postcards, and sample scripts for use by the LNC and paid staff. Nebraska volunteers have produced an astounding number of hand-written postcards to be mailed next week to a broader range of District 32 voters in preparation for the May 15th primary. Making Laura the clear leader in the top-two non-partisan primary could make a huge difference in the November election.

Jeremy also suggested, if the LNC agrees that it would be appropriate and within budget constraints, an additional $10,000 contribution at the end of November that would be useful for a last-minute publicity blast. The additional $2,500 and $10,000 could be rolled into my current motion or into separate motions for later approval. I am comfortable with either approach although approving the $2,500 now would allow Wes and his staff to get a jump start on the District 32 Libertarian outreach effort. Even if $5,000 is determined to be the legal limit for direct contributions, as suggested by Mr. O’Donnell, the $2,500 for indirect campaign support should not be an issue. Thoughts?

I simply copied some emails from the LNC Rep page online. That may be something to have Ken look into, or whoever has taken that role on now. Also, as noted originally, I didn’t include every member in this email thread, so again, I hope this is all getting to everyone on the business discussion forum.

Thanks again, everyone!

Jared Hall had shared with me some of the Ebke campaign budget the other night, and it's very tight and frugal. They're doing a lot, with a little money. Also, noted that is that 5K sooner, rather than later, (even is speculatively a larger amount) would be immediately beneficial. I'd be in-favor of expediting 5K to Laura Ebke's campaign. If more money is able to be given later, we can address that later in her campaign.

It was explained to me that the this May 15th primary is crucial, as the top-two candidates move on, and there are three people running. Laura Ebke needs to be one of the top-two who make it out the primary heat. Money asap would be most helpful.

I understand that time was set aside for the LNC meeting in Denver, but what process do we have that would help us expedite the 5K to Senator Ebke's campaign? Some of the more experienced LNC members, please fill me in as to what are our options?

I so appreciate all of the support I'm seeing in these from the national LP. Its just overwhelming to read, and brings my heart great jot. I've never worked on a state senate race with this much out of state helpful support.

If I can make a suggestion or plea to you on this discussion: If you're going to be kind enough to make such a generous contribution over $5k, It would be very positive from a financial reporting perspective to receive $5k soon. Anything over a $5k donation now will potentially be used against senator ebke in the general election as a "bought and paid for by the LP" message from the Governor's consultant (I know how she works from her previous strategies). Earmarking any additional donation from the LP in late Oct or Nov would be wonderful. This is best case scenario for us, as we believe $5k is not enough for the Republican candidates to make a big fuss about, but an amount that means a great deal to us. I can promise you that we will take great monetary fiscal care of any donation that is made. Anyone on this email is welcome to call me at 402-610-2159 with any specific questions regarding budgeting, getting a campaign update, or understanding our needs for this donation and exactly how we will very wisely invest it to receive a return.

I so appreciate your thoughtfulness in all of this.

Much thanks,

"Move to contribute $5,000 to the Nebraska Unicameral 2018 District 32 re-election campaign for Senator Laura Ebke, and increase expense line 60-Candidate, Campaign & Initiatives by $5,000."

Writing in favor: I have long advocated that LP institutions offer small symbolic seed contributions to encourage bottom-up fund-raising by candidates and project initiators. This proposed contribution meets that criteria. Like Larry Sharpe, Senator Ebke has inspired us with her astounding fund-raising acumen and, along with Larry, set the standard for Libertarian candidates. While we are waiting to roll out our candidate support criteria committee, if there ever was a legitimate contribution to a serious, dedicated, and ethical Libertarian candidate in a critical race with a good chance of WINNING, this is it.

If this proposal can be handled more expeditiously at the upcoming April 21-22 LNC meeting in Denver, I will happily withdraw the motion.

In my opinion, the LNC can afford a contribution, and the motion should include increasing expense line 60-Candidate, Campaign & Initiatives by the amount of the contribution.

I would ask the Treasurer if, in his opinion, the LNC can afford a contribution to the Ebke campaign at this time and from what budget line would it come from. I'd be happy to write and sponsor an email ballot which I would hope would be expedited and not wait the full 10 days.

Dear Liberty friends,

I am writing today on behalf of Nebraska State Senator Laura Ebke. We are entering the last five weeks of campaign mode before the Primary on May 15.

Senator Ebke has built a great team of qualified staff (most are unpaid volunteers) and field volunteers, encompassing individuals from all political backgrounds. The campaign recently opened two new campaign offices in Crete and Geneva, as her district is extremely large – 2,516 square miles - encompassing four whole counties and a sliver of Lancaster County (where the capital is located). Signs, shirts, literature and several pieces of campaign literature have been designed, printed, and paid for at a reduced rate thanks to one of Senator Ebke's Libertarian supporters who owns a print shop and is providing at-cost materials. 36 "Meet and Greet" events have been planned and advertised across the district that will take place in the next 3 weeks in more than 30 towns and villages.

Senator Ebke continues to make news, sometimes with absurd ad value (thanks to a friend in that field) for little more than her actions in the Unicameral, and also her monthly community "Political Brew" events held at a local brew house where she invites other elected officials to cordially discuss issues and policy.

Everyone is well aware of Laura's ability to fundraise for her campaign. However, with all that we still have to accomplish before the primary election, we are asking for a donation from the LNC. This will help ensure the printing of variable by-county door hangers for the rural counties that will include localized messages; help cover the cost of postage expenditures; 16 newspaper ads in the 9 papers in the district; a radio ad; food and other costs for our volunteers at our campaign events, including canvassing and phone banking; booths at county fairs during the upcoming season; and even covering the costs of paid staff, the CRM, data needs, and walking and call apps.

As a point of emphasis, Laura is the incumbent in this election, but Republican Governor Pete Ricketts is a billionaire whose family owns TD Ameritrade and the Chicago Cubs. His personal vendetta for Laura even before she became a Libertarian is well-known. This has led to him hand picking her her main opponent, a well-funded Republican, who is attacking Senator Ebke for her party affiliation.

There is also a third candidate in this race – another Republican who is supported by the local agriculture community.

As Nebraska's Unicameral is non-partisan, so too is the election. This means that only the top two in the election results will move on to the General Election in November. It is paramount that we all chip in to ensure a Libertarian victory, as this can be only the beginning!

Thank you kindly for your time,

I met with Jeremy Jensen, Laura’s campaign manager, this afternoon in
Omaha. Jeremy recommended that a $5,000 would be best for now (as soon
as possible) to characterize Laura’s campaign as funded by small
grass-roots donors in contrast with her opponent’s much larger
contributions from well-heeled patrons, including his well-known
political sponsor. After the primary, Jeremy suggests that $2,500 be
approved by the LNC for use at the discretion of Wes for handwritten
postcards or notes to be mailed just to Libertarians in Laura’s
district. Those Libertarians could make the difference and could be
tapped as volunteers for Laura’s post-primary campaign. If the LP does
not already have the District 32 Libertarian list, Jeremy can provide
the list, sample postcards, and sample scripts for use by the LNC and
paid staff. Nebraska volunteers have produced an astounding number of
hand-written postcards to be mailed next week to a broader range of
District 32 voters in preparation for the May 15^th primary. Making
Laura the clear leader in the top-two non-partisan primary could make a
huge difference in the November election.

Jeremy also suggested, if the LNC agrees that it would be appropriate
and within budget constraints, an additional $10,000 contribution at
the end of November that would be useful for a last-minute publicity
blast. The additional $2,500 and $10,000 could be rolled into my
current motion or into separate motions for later approval. I am
comfortable with either approach although approving the $2,500 now
would allow Wes and his staff to get a jump start on the District 32
Libertarian outreach effort. Even if $5,000 is determined to be the
legal limit for direct contributions, as suggested by Mr. O’Donnell,
the $2,500 for indirect campaign support should not be an issue.
   Thoughts?

If more money is able to be given later, we can address that later in

It was explained to me that the this May 15th primary is crucial, as

Laura Ebke needs to be one of the top-two who make it out the primary

I so appreciate all of the support I'm seeing in these from the

If I can make a suggestion or plea to you on this discussion: If
you're going to be kind enough to make such a generous contribution
over $5k, It would be very positive from a financial reporting
perspective to receive $5k soon. Anything over a $5k donation now will
potentially be used against senator ebke in the general election as a
"bought and paid for by the LP" message from the Governor's consultant
(I know how she works from her previous strategies). Earmarking any
additional donation from the LP in late Oct or Nov would be wonderful.
This is best case scenario for us, as we believe $5k is not enough
for the Republican candidates to make a big fuss about, but an amount
that means a great deal to us. I can promise you that we will take
great monetary fiscal care of any donation that is made. Anyone on

The revenues and expenses are running well against the budget so far

     Dear Liberty friends,

I am writing today on behalf of Nebraska State Senator Laura Ebke.
We are entering the last five weeks of campaign mode before the
     Primary on May 15.

Senator Ebke has built a great team of qualified staff (most are
unpaid volunteers) and field volunteers, encompassing individuals
from all political backgrounds. The campaign recently opened two new
campaign offices in Crete and Geneva, as her district is extremely
large – 2,516 square miles - encompassing four whole counties and a
sliver of Lancaster County (where the capital is located). Signs,
shirts, literature and several pieces of campaign literature have
been designed, printed, and paid for at a reduced rate thanks to one
of Senator Ebke's Libertarian supporters who owns a print shop and
is providing at-cost materials. 36 "Meet and Greet" events have been
planned and advertised across the district that will take place in
the next 3 weeks in more than 30 towns and villages.

Senator Ebke continues to make news, sometimes with absurd ad value
(thanks to a friend in that field) for little more than her actions
in the Unicameral, and also her monthly community "Political Brew"
events held at a local brew house where she invites other elected
officials to cordially discuss issues and policy.

Everyone is well aware of Laura's ability to fundraise for her
campaign. However, with all that we still have to accomplish before
the primary election, we are asking for a donation from the LNC.
This will help ensure the printing of variable by-county door
     hangers for the rural counties that will include localized messages;
help cover the cost of postage expenditures; 16 newspaper ads in the
9 papers in the district; a radio ad; food and other costs for our
volunteers at our campaign events, including canvassing and phone
banking; booths at county fairs during the upcoming season; and even
covering the costs of paid staff, the CRM, data needs, and walking
     and call apps.

As a point of emphasis, Laura is the incumbent in this election, but
Republican Governor Pete Ricketts is a billionaire whose family owns
TD Ameritrade and the Chicago Cubs. His personal vendetta for Laura
even before she became a Libertarian is well-known. This has led to
him hand picking her her main opponent, a well-funded Republican,
who is attacking Senator Ebke for her party affiliation.

There is also a third candidate in this race – another Republican
who is supported by the local agriculture community.

As Nebraska's Unicameral is non-partisan, so too is the election.
This means that only the top two in the election results will move
on to the General Election in November. It is paramount that we all
chip in to ensure a Libertarian victory, as this can be only the
     beginning!
