Texas Libertarian candidates currently show as LIB on ballots here.
Obviously, the assumption that we are liberals (since we are not
Republicans) is one we fight daily.
We have an opportunity to change the abbreviation, but we are being told it
has to be 3-letters, and those letters must be found in the word
Libertarian. So, we already have an idea of what we would change to.
I am trying to find out what experience other states have had with this, if
any.
Opinions on this matter here include fear that changing it will backfire,
and we lose votes. Others say that we don't have data supporting either, so
why not try. Many think it could be another step toward overcoming the
stigma we already face here in Texas by not being Republican.
Many of us have folks in our own circles who hear we are Libertarian, and
say things like "that sounds liberal" or "is that like liberal?" Then, they
go to the voting and see LIB - suspicion confirmed.
Anyway, if any of your states have experience with this specific balloting
issue, let me know.
