I am going to put the conclusion first since I know folks will be really
busy and have to skim a few things.
== At the beginning of the term, our Secretary indicated that her draft
minutes had more content than has been included in the past,==
That is one way to put it, but not a complete way. I indicated that my
draft contained more than my immediate successor and *less* than other
prior Secretaries, thus the custom of this body has been to include FAR
more.
==and she acknowledged that it's up to the LNC to decide whether it wants
our minutes to include those things.==
Yes of course as the approving body. *However,* unless there is something
missing or something that clearly is prejudicial in some way, I would hope
that we are not going to spend time re-making me in my successor's image.
I think some of these are quibbles that I think should be left up to the
competency of the elected Secretary. Dr. Lark kindly provided a lot of
suggestions - I accepted most and declined some, and that was that. With
one possible exception (i.e. the appendix) I fail to see why this had to be
held up for this meeting. I note that I was Secretary pro tem at the
December 2017 meeting and the same issue came up and the minutes were
approved as I drafted them with the sense of the room of those voting to
approve being this is a stylistic difference and that the Secretary should
not be micromanaged.
I further note that there are items in my minutes such as the applause for
the good work of the LPHPC was not challenged - why? Because details like
that have been routinely included and not required by RONR as has MANY
other items in our minutes such as (and I sincerely love this) noting that
randomization has been done by rolling the Secretary's 30-sided die. Why
some and not others? Style and tone of the present LNC.
Alicia's comments do not strip things bare - they leave in some things - so
it seems this isn't even a RONR thing but a style issue, and I ask the LNC
let me be me please.
Now the point by point responses with the most substantive one first:
*The appendix of the gallery comments and Starchild's notes. *
This is not in the body but as an appendix. At a past meeting where it was
objected (and I was the one doing the objecting) that past convention
minutes contained editorial comments on RONR by Alicia, the comprimise that
was reached since she felt that information valuable (as did I) that these
could be put in an appendix just like her audit information is. There is
no reason under this precedent that this should not be the same. Further,
however, and more importantly - the body through myself and the Chair told
the gallery that their concerns would be summarized and told Starchild that
his notes would be appended. There were no objections then and thus, I do
not think we can renege on our words now.
*Deletion of the lengthy "prelude":*
That was a deviation from most meetings as it was a hectic post-convention
meeting and that is simply how the conversation went - a bit
helter-skelter. In order to accurately represent the decisions and
organization (whether formal votes or not) this introduction was
necessary. But more important *what harm is there in keeping it to
over-ride the decisions of the Secretary?*
*The various deleted comments:*
If we were strictly following RONR skeletor formt why not more? There is
nothing harmful or incorrect in the items and helps the reader to
understand the flow. I frankly think too little was included.
*The deleted outro:*
Deleting thanking the public who attending? That truly baffles me.
Everyone is along these lines and I ask the LNC to let me do my job and
allow for style differences or show me actual harm in any of these and I
will gladly amend. I note that I ran these minutes before submission by
two very competent persons - one of them an excellent past Secretary (Joe
Dehn) and the other a serious contender in one Secretary run and a past
Vice-Chair (Chuck Moulton) - I modified in accordance with their
suggestions to get where they are at now.
PS: RONR acknowledges these style differences, see page 96, lines 9-17 fro
approval of executive session minutes as an example.
