Fellow LNC Members,
Please read what Dave Aitken, Colorado, has written below. In short, there
have been many (about 5400) in Colorado who have changed their registration
from Libertarian and he would like the LNC to consider funding in whole or
part a postcard campaign to try to identify their reasons for leaving. If
there is preliminary support I will craft a motion. Thoughts?
While I recognize that this would primarily benefit Colorado, the data
collected could give us a blue print for other areas in the nation. I'm not
sold on postcards, however.
Richard

Hi Richard:
I believe you've had some discussions with Roger Barris and Lauren
Daugherty about this. I spoke with Wayne Harlos (chair) about this last
night at the Denver meeting. He told to run with it.
As a result of importing the SOS voter registration file over the past 2-3
years, I have captured the names and addresses of over 5400 people in
Colorado who changed their registration from Libertarian to something else.
I expect to have another 1000 when I get the next voter file in February.
They left the party for some reason or other. It's possible that some of
them moved and did not update their registration. I have the impression
that everybody in LPCO leadership thinks we should find out why they left.
I am suggesting sending a postcard to these people with a link to an online
survey (hosted by survey monkey, us, or someone else). The postcard could
say something like ""Hello: According to our records, you changed your
voter registration from Libertarian
to something else. Please help us understand why you did this and answer
some questions in our short, anonymous, online survey. You can start the
survey by entering this web address in your internet browser address bar:
https://lp.org/survey1"
I am writing to you because 1) I believe this will benefit the entire
party; and 2) LPCO can't afford to fund the whole cost. I estimate the
printing and mailing cost for 7,000 postcards to be about $3,500. I'm
assuming the cost for putting the survey online is minimal and that
processing the results can be handled in house.
Here's a possible list of questions for the survey. I think we should be
brutally honest with ourselves and find out the truth. I don't know
anything about polling or survey design, so suggestions are welcome.
---------
1. on a scale of 1-10, are national Libertarian candidates too radical or
not radical enough?
2. on a scale of 1-10, are state Libertarian candidates too radical or not
radical enough?
3. 1-10, should Libertarian candidates be more mainstream or less
mainstream?
4. 1-10, is the LP effective or not?
5. 1-10, how far left or right is the party.
6. if there is one political issue that caused you to leave the party,
what is it? (dropdown)
7. if there is one management issue that caused you to leave the party,
what is it? (dropdown) (not organized, not effective, candidate quality,
too small, etc)
8. 1-10, where on spectrum between freedom and slavery do you fit?
9. 1-10, are Libertarian candidates professional or amateur?
10. 1-10, are Libertarian candidates regular people or not?
11. 1-10, do we need more govt, less govt?
12. Do you consider yourself Socialist, Progressive, Liberal, Free Market
Conservative, Social Conservative, Libertarian, Centrist, Authoritarian
13. Current party affiliation (D,R,L,G,ACP,UAF,Other)
14. 1-10, did you get too much contact or not enough contact from the party.
