Perhaps our email addresses could be displayed in a form such as <starchild[at]lp[dot]org>. While some email-harvesting webcrawlers may see through that, I imagine it would reduce spam somewhat.

Webforms are less user-friendly, especially if people have to do a "Capcha" type thing each time. I would discourage us going in that direction.

Another idea – automating a response mechanism that sends each spammer the email addresses of all the other spammers who write to us. Let them keep each other busy!

“This practice [of each tribe speaking a substantially different language] results from the circumstance of their having never submitted themselves to any laws, any coercive power, any shadow of government. Their only controls are their manners, and that moral sense of right and wrong, which, like the sense of tasting and feeling, in every man makes a part of his nature. An offence against these is punished by contempt, by exclusion from society, or, where the case is serious, as that of murder, by the individuals whom it concerns. Imperfect as this species of coercion may seem, crimes are very rare among them: insomuch that were it made a question, whether no law, as among the savage Americans, or too much law, as among the civilized Europeans, submits man to the greatest evil, one who has seen both conditions of existence would pronounce it to be the last: and that the sheep are happier of themselves, than under care of the wolves. It will be said, that great societies cannot exist without government. The Savages therefore break them into small ones.”

– Thomas Jefferson, speaking of indigenous Americans, in Notes on Virginia, p. 220. Also online at http://etext.virginia.edu/etcbin/ot2www-singleauthor?specfile=/web/data/jefferson/texts/jefall.o2w

   Dear Beloved
Compliments of the day to you! By this e-mail, I do sincerely
   apologise
for my intrusion of your privacy. However, I have a serious concern
   with
which I believe you might be of help and for this reason I decided
   to
e-mail you believing in my faith that you will handle this issue
   with
   sincere mind.
I am Mrs Patricia Knewl, from Solomon Island, I am married to Dr.
   John
Knewl who worked with our Embassy in Cote d'ivoire for nine years
   before
he died on the 15th November 2010. We were married for eleven years
without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only
   four
days. Please I am contacting you to let you know my desire to
   establish
a charity foundation in your country with some amount of Euro
(EUR8,800,000.00) which I inherited from my late husband (Dr. John
Knewl) It is my desire to see that this money is invested to any
   charity
organization of your choice in your country and distributed each
   year
among the charity organizations, motherless baby's home, mosques,
churches, Schools, supporting destitute aged men and women or
   whatever
you may have in mind that will be to the benefit of the less
   fortunate.
I asked members of my husband family to donate to charity
   organization,
they refused and kept the money for themselves. Hence, I do not
   trust
them anymore, they are not contented with what left for them and all
their wealth. I took this decision because I was raised from a
motherless baby's home and presently, I'm hospitalized where I am
undergoing treatment for my up coming cancer surgery operation.
   Please
reply as soon as possible to confirming your acceptance to this
proposition so that I will give you all the relevant information
   that
will authorise the release and transfer of the fund to you as my
   duly
   assigned representative.
Thank you in advance for your understanding and I look forward
   hearing
   from you urgently.
   Yours sister
   Mrs Patricia Knewl
