I don't know of any legal reasons why we can't contract with
commission-based fundraisers. However, I as a the person in charge of
fundraising for the national party, have thoughts on the matter.
Having worked in and around fundraising for all of my professional
career, I have observed many formats and styles of fundraising and seen
what worked in different situations.
I think there are cases in which commission-based fundraising is helpful
or worth pursuing but I am generally against it.
It can set up the wrong set of incentives for the fundraiser. Also, it
focuses on short-term dollars-in-the-door rather than long-term
relationship building which an organization needs to grow and thrive
financially. None of our fundraisers are paid on commission and I think
it is wise to keep it that way.
Our fundraising needs to be focused on customer service and long-term
relationship building. Commission-based fundraising does neither of
those things.
