If anyone did not see the email submission from Dr. Varner, I've copied
it below for the List.
There is a strong sentiment for support of this kind of resolution from
members I've spoken with, And I would like to workshop some of the
language with the full LNC before sponsoring a final version for
consideration.
Dear Members of the LNC,
As many of you know, the crisis in Venezuela is causing a tremendous
amount of human suffering and it has culminated in an ongoing political,
economic and humanitarian crisis. The Libertarian Party has an
opportunity to speak up and advocate for a Libertarian policy that can
ease the human suffering in the region and changes the lives of hundreds
of thousands of Venezuelans. I'd like to suggest to you that the LNC
pass a resolution calling on the US congress to adopt a policy of
universal asylum for Venezuelans. As the only political party in the
United States that advocates for the free movement of people across
borders, we have a unique opportunity to showcase the humanitarian
benefits of our policies while pushing congress to meaningfully address
the humanitarian crisis by expanding freedom.
I have attached below a draft resolution for your consideration. If you
would like to discuss the matter with me, please feel free to reach out
on facebook or by telephone. If you have questions about the history of
the conflict or the current political situation, I'll be happy to direct
you good resources to understand the sitaution. Finally, if you would
like to speak to the actual victims of the Maduro regime, I will be
happy to arrange a phone call with one or more people who have been
personally hurt in this crisis.
Sincerely,
Kyle Varner
Proposed Resolution:
Whereas, the Libertarian Party supports human rights and the free
movement of people across
borders;
Whereas, the illegal and statist regime of Nicolas Maduro has destroyed
the Venezuelan
economy, including state seizures of property owned by US citizens and
companies, and also
by deceiving US citizens and companies here at home into helping the
regime launder money
stolen from Venezuelan taxpayers, through real estate holdings and webs
of shell companies;
Whereas, due to centrally planned economic policies and the regime's
control of food and
medical supplies, millions of Venezuelans face starvation;
Whereas the Maduro regime has deprived the Venezuelan people of their
right to bear arms
and terrorized them with extrajudicial executions by government security
forces and by
deploying state-sponsored paramilitary groups for violent repression;
Whereas the destruction of free markets and voluntary exchange in
Venezuela has resulted in
the accelerated decay of health infrastructure and rampant spread of
deadly diseases;
Whereas members of the Libertarian Movement of Venezuela and multiple
independent
libertarians in allied organizations have been arrested, beaten,
tortured, and robbed by
Maduro's police, soldiers, and paramilitary enforcers seeking to repress
peaceful dissident
activism;
Whereas the Venezuelan armed forces have thus far demonstrated a
cowardly refusal to obey the 1999
Venezuelan constitution, and supported a tyrant who is actively
oppressing the masses;
Be it resolved that:
1) The Libertarian Party calls on the US Congress to enact a policy of
automatic asylum for all
Venezuelan citizens so that the victims of the Maduro regime may seek
safety and security in a
more stable economy with comparatively less government intervention and
comparatively more
respect for civil liberties.
2) The Libertarian Party calls on the US congress to remove any and all
legal barriers to
immigration for those Venezuelans who seek safety and freedom in the
United States of
America.
