Dear colleagues:

I hope all is well with you, and that you enjoyed a wonderful
Independence Day celebration.  I am writing to offer comments about
various items; I hope you find my comments worthy of your attention.

1)  In a separate message I shall vote "aye" on the motion currently
before us.  Frankly, I share the concerns regarding micromanagement and
other potential problems that may arise from approval of the motion.
Also, I would have preferred that the APRC be responsible for final
approval of revised material.  (The argument in favor of the LNC
exercising that duty in this situation is reasonable.)

However, given that the original material in question can
reasonably be viewed as being in conflict with the LP platform, I
believe the actions specified in the motion are appropriate.

2)  Shortly after receiving the message from Dan Fishman last Friday
(June 28) in which he announced the resignation of Lauren Daugherty, I
contacted her to thank her for her tremendous service to the LP and the
liberty movement.

I also informed her in my capacity as chair of the Employment
Policy and Compensation Committee (EPCC) that my EPCC colleagues and I
consider it appropriate to conduct a post-employment interview with her
if she is so inclined.  I indicated that the EPCC would respect her
preferences concerning how she would like to proceed, such as whether to
conduct the interview with the EPCC or/and other groups of people, the
date of the interview, and so forth.

As you may have seen, she indicated in a message to the LNC on
Sunday (June 30) that she felt the EPCC is the best entity to conduct an
exit interview, and expressed a preference that the EPCC do so.  She
also indicated that she is happy to address the LNC during the upcoming
meeting, albeit with the understanding that there are topics upon which
she will not comment.  Given that there has been subsequent discussion
by the LNC regarding this matter, I hope she will contact the LNC soon
to confirm how she wishes to proceed.

3)  Thanks to Mr. Longstreth for his message on Wednesday (July 2)
regarding requests for links on LP.org to debates among people seeking
the LP presidential nomination.  I strongly agree that we should have a
discussion soon about this matter.  However, I prefer that the
discussion focus upon the broader issue of requests from others (by both
individuals and organizations) for various types of promotion via our
several media.

Since developing policies regarding the broader issue may take a
great deal of time, it may be appropriate for us to take action at the
upcoming meeting on the more specific (and timely) issue regarding links
to debates.  However, we should be careful to ensure that a decision
involving the more specific issue does not place us in an uncomfortable
position when we consider the broader issue.

4)  Thanks also to Mr. Fishman for circulating his proposal this morning
for putting Mr. Sarwark to work as a contractor to conduct fundraising
activities.  While benefits may accrue if the proposal is approved, for
various reasons (some of which have already been mentioned by other
people) I am not willing to support it.

As always, thanks for your work for liberty.  I look forward to
seeing you again soon.

     Take care,
     Jim
