I agree entirely. The elected L has a harder job. Besides the fact that Rs and Ds vote as their party tells them, they aren't faced with the difficult task of reconciling a radical philosophy to voting on specific questions - not always an easy question.

Winning elections at the low level, by the way, builds organization. People join successful groups - winning elections attracts volunteers. The town councilman isn't all that busy with his office, and can build a network of support, so that when a run is made one level up, the candidate has elected officials within each district to call on for door knocking - people who are, presumably, well-known and liked.

Joshua A. Our candidates will not be able to compete in any of the important aspects of winning elections against professional politicians; especially those who are funded by the special interest groups in addition to the major parties. We should be running our best candidates in election in which our candidates are on an equal level with the competition. We should be encouraging candidates to seek out appointed offices and use the resulting resume and name recognition to advance to local municipal, and then, county level offices.

<span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1f497d">

<span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1f497d">As I have been promoting, even at the municipal and county levels, electoral success cannot be achieved unless there exists a local organization capable of providing the necessary support to win an election. Currently, at all levels, our candidates are basically on their own trying to defeat a well funded organization with hundreds of volunteers and donors. Experience in Colorado’s (relatively) recent electoral wins at the municipal level required a full effort by the entire state organization to pull off a victory.

<span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1f497d">

<span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif";color:#1f497d">I urge all of you to read this article carefully and consider its implications in preparation for our December meeting at which the 2015 budget will be considered. Having a local organization to support an elected Libertarian is even more important after the election than before. In my state, Colorado, there 644 bills introduced in the latest 120 calendar day legislative session. Without organizational support, there is no way an elected official can deal with this level of work without a large support group. The R’s and D’s don’t really have this problem, they just have to vote as their leadership tells them. A Libertarian legislator will be needing the support of at least a dozen volunteers if s/he is to do a respectable job and possibly get re-elected.
