It sounds easy to ask people to just go out and get a professional
photo made. But the reality is, not many people will actually get
around to it. I've been meaning to get an updated photo for myself
for about 5 years. Two former Chairs never seemed to get around to
it. I'm glad Nick is going to make it happen.

People are often already dressed up for LNC meetings and the
photographer will be right there, so 20 people don't have to
individually find a photographer, schedule a session, get dressed
just for that reason, drive to a location, take the trouble to email
me the photos, etc.

I think this is a good efficient use of funds. But, I'm guessing
maybe 15 people will take us up on the offer, and probably 8 to 10
will contribute $100 or more to cover the costs. So I'm estimating
we're probably looking at more like $500 to $700 total cost to the
LNC. We'll see.

I'll contribute $100 at https://www.lp.org/contribute to defray the
cost for my photo, and I'll contribute $100 also, if Robert Kraus
also gets a photo made, after we receive the photos.

Dear Dr. Lieberman,
I'm not going to make anyone sit for a photo they don't want. If you
decide to reconsider, the photographer will be there and setup to take
photos for everyone who will sit for him. I would like to have
everyone present take advantage of that opportunity.
I have been told by our Political Director that I need more and better
photos to go out with media releases. I've also been told by
convention planners for states I've been invited to speak to that they
would like more and better photos for their promotional materials.
For these reasons, I was planning to retain Mr. Uilkie.
In consultation with Mr. Benedict, he suggested that I try to
negotiate a reduced rate to get more and better photographs for the
rest of the LNC. I did, and the final cost will be less than $100 per
person. The end result is that our committee will have better looking
photographs on our soon-to-be redesigned website with out soon-to-be
redesigned logo. The committee will have high-quality photos that
they can use for their next run for Federal, state, or local office.
The committee will have high-quality photos that they can send to
organizers of events and conventions that they go out to speak to.
I am as careful with donor funds as I am with my own. I have decided
that it makes sense to spend less than $100 per LNC member who spends
thousands of dollars of their own money multiple times per year to
travel to attend to the party's business to improve the image our
party shows to the public.
I'm happy if members of the LNC wish to donate to the party to defray
some of that cost; board fundraising is below target so far for the
year anyway. I'm happy if some of our sustaining members wish to
donate to the party to defray some of that cost; we represent them.
The LNC is well within its prerogative to override my decision on this
issue (as on many other things), but if you do so I will still use my
Chair's discretionary funds to pay for this because I think it's good
for the LNC and the Libertarian Party.
I hope you will reconsider,
Nick

As you all know, the National LP is not exactly flush with cash right now.
As I wrote earlier, having high-quality photographs "for the media", and for
the LP web site, is not a bad thing. However, I don't think it is a good
idea at this time to spend what could be over $2000 of our donor's money on
a project that is clearly very optional.
As a substitute, I propose the following:
1. Those LNC members who wish to take advantage of Mr. Sarwark's offer
must donate $100 to the National LP to pay for the photos. I hope that
method is FEC compliant.
OR
2. If you are not satisfied with the quality of your photo at
http://www.lp.org/lnc-leadership
You can go to a provider of Passport photos near your home and get a
digital Passport photo. These will probably not be professional quality,
but they should suffice for the LP web site. With just minimal Google
searching, I found a local store that will do them for $10.
OR
3. You can have a family member or friend take a photo of you, after
reading these tips:
http://www.sitepoint.com/faking-pro-portraits-phone-camera/
I understand that spending $2000 is not going to throw the National LP into
bankruptcy. However, since our current reserve is below the reserve
requirement, I don't think it sends the right message to our members to
spend National LP funds on this particular project at this time.
For the above reasons, I decline to have the professional photographer take
a photograph of me at the LNC Session in Phoenix.

LNC funds, approximate cost is $100 per person, the photographer will
waive his normal $200 setup fee.
