Caryn, it sounds like a great event. Probably we can work
something out.

I do ask the LNC to perhaps discuss the pros and cons of having
the national LP involved in particular events, either by simply
sending funds, or by sending our board members or staff.

I get lots of requests from candidates, state, and county
organizations for the national LP to support their particular
event or campaign, often because it's one of national importance.

Once we fund the Colorado booth, I'm pretty sure that will result
in a lot of other requests.

How to decide what to fund, where to go, and what not to fund,
and where not to go, is not easy. I sure wish we could go
everywhere.

See the discussion below from earlier in the year about Bonnaroo.

If the national LP pays for the booth, and the national LP
collects donations at the booth, then strict campaign finance
rules have to be followed. If, say, you collect a pile of $1's, $5
's, and $20's, and a few misspelled credit cards, then send us an
email about how you took all the cash and wrote a check yourself
for the total--that would put us in a real regulatory reporting
bind.

Keep that in mind. Plus the discussion below. Thanks.

Another option for Colorado is, seek Andy Burn's advice, follow
his exact directions, the national LP will send him there to help
you, LP Colorado pays for all the booth fee and materials to be
sold, and the LP Colorado keeps all the profits. The national LP
provides the service of sending our best advisor, Andy Burns, who
sold something like $12,000 worth of T-shirts at one Minnesota
state fair.

Now if Caryn is going to be there, and can insure all FEC
campaign finance rules are followed, then I'll feel more
comfortable about that booth raising funds for the national LP.
The LNC was trying to slash budgets left and right at the recent
meeting in order to pay for a new website for LP.org.

No budget expansion was brought up. So, this is a no go. Sorry about
that.

Jim Tomasik, you saw the proposal. Can you run the project through
the LP Tennessee? The national LP can pay for Andy's trip there and
time spent assisting the LP Tennessee. But the costs of the shirts
and things, plus all the profits from the shirts and things, would
need to go straight to the LP Tennessee. Can Tennessee handle this,
including the risk? The risk is that shirts and stuff are bought,
but not sold.
$4,000 T-shirts and things.
Revenue:
$3,000 T-shirt sales.

limited to attracting just people within a state) and do some basic
research. Just getting to that stage would be good.
Included Wes in this and I'll assume it's on the agenda for the LNC

I would love to see the LP at cost effective events like this. I
think the key is making sure that if we do events like this, that we
do them well. There is an art to it. Obviously, right now the national
party is rebranding and producing new materials that will make our
presence much more polished and productive at such events. Andy has
shown us from his experience at the Minnesota state fair that such
events can also generate significant revenue, again, when we are
intentional and strategic with our approach to the event. Andy
mentioned he'd be happy to help manage this on behalf of the national
party and I think he'd be the perfect choice.
I don't know all the other factors at play. But, in my opinion, if
current resources (both financial and staff time) were available, then
events like this could be an excellent opportunity to 1) raise
awareness of the LP, 2) raise money, 3) increase membership...all,
again, with the caveat that we have to be strategic and deliberate in
how we execute those events. I keep harping on that because time and
time again I see the party at all levels (not picking on anyone at
all), including my own county party, put in lots of time and effort
into events and get little or nothing in return because they were not
strategic and deliberate in how they conducted the booth at the event
or followed up afterwards.

I am all for doing this. Has the LP done events similar to this
before? My
understanding is that it hasn't so we should at least test it out.
I
could check with MN Norml as well who has done major music
festivals to see what their concrete results were (revenue raised,
contacts generated). This would be an appropriate outreach event
for national seeing that attendees come from all over the country
and see if the TN affiliate can assist. I would be willing to
project manage it if the LNC decided to do it. Camping looks good.
