I am part of several liberty-oriented organizations that benefit significantly from effective but collaborative executive committees that emphasize communication, delegation and empowerment of the committees and individual Libertarians that they represent.

Another concern that I noted during the emergency EC meeting last night was the delay on the availability of the brief until the day before the filing deadline. The good news is that the communication of the reasons for the delay was handled in a straight-forward, professional and transparent manner. The internal deadline communication delays were perfectly understandable. However, the delay on the availability of the brief by the law firm concerned me. Evidently law firm delay revolved around the happy event of an addition to the family of a contributor to the preparation of the brief. However, the law firm delay may suggest a lackadaisical approach to brief preparation contributor backup provisions.

The law firm contribution to the delay and the need for a last-minute EC meeting coupled with the bothersome lukewarm descriptions of the Libertarian Party in the brief leave me somewhat dubious of the relationship between the law firm and the LP. The marginally patronizing, condescending tone of the descriptions of the LP in the brief are probably a minor issue that Oliver Hall said will be promptly corrected. However, I think we should encourage Mr. Hall to be vigilant for any chinks in the ability and inclination of the law firm to enthusiastically represent the Libertarian Party. Hopefully this turns out to be a minor wordsmithing concern that will not be repeated in the future.

Finally, I was bothered by the EC voting process in light of the big picture implications of joining the amicus lawsuit. An EC member call to Richard Winger during the vote confirmed the seriousness of the lawsuit and the fact that issue it addresses is a wrong that needs to be righted and is in the interest of the LP to help meet this Ohio political shenanigan head-on. I am concerned when final vote decisions are determined by factors that I would facetiously describe as “dotting the T’s and crossing the I’s” rather than big picture considerations. True, we always need to dot the I’s and cross the T’s. However, for the sake of the LP and the cause of freedom, I would hope that issue big picture considerations will be the overriding determining factor in important EC votes and an important factor when we choose our next set of LP leaders in New Orleans.

Thoughts?

~David Pratt

2018 Omaha Roads to Freedom Un-Convention

Freedom, Nothing More, Nothing Less

~David Pratt Demarest

Roads to Freedom Foundation, Founder

LNC Region 6 Representative (IA, IL, MN, MO, ND, NE, WI)

LSLA Vice-Chair

LPNE State Central Committee, Secretary

LPRC Board Member, Nebraska State Coordinator

David.Demarest@LP.org

Secretary@LPNE.org

DPDemarest@centurylink.net

DPrattDemarest@gmail.com

Cell: 402-981-6469

Home: 402-493-0873

From: Lnc-business [mailto:lnc-business-bounces@hq.lp.org] On Behalf Of Caryn Ann Harlos
Sent: Friday, September 22, 2017 2:25 AM
To: Libertarian National Committee list <lnc-business@hq.lp.org>
Subject: Re: [Lnc-business] EC meeting tonight, Thursday, Sept 21, 9:30pm Eastern regarding Husted Amicus Brief

Let me examine the policy manual provision in question and think about it Starchild.
