I'd assume in a situation where policy is ambiguous, using a reasonable
<br>
test (which I know can be quite flexible, but at the end of the day do
<br>
we want to live in a world where every decision making process is
<br>
codified?).
<br>
<br>
Is it reasonable that we can't background check everyone who signs up
<br>
for the party so shouldn't be at fault for who signs up?
<br>
This is reasonable, nor should we want to big brother our members while
<br>
fighting big brother
<br>
<br>
Is it reasonable we would want to not associate with those who hurt
<br>
children?
<br>
Yes, and this is obvious
<br>
<br>
Is it reasonable to do due diligence when red flags are waived such as a
<br>
letter postmarked from a prison?
<br>
Of course, while we shouldn't scrutinize every member it doesn't mean
<br>
you ignore signs of of legal and organizational risks.
<br>
<br>
Is it reasonable to ignore findings assuming all the above is
<br>
reasonable? This is where it gets complicated...
<br>
<br>
I don't think either choice endorses crime or implies the party should
<br>
become big brother and begin vetting and expelling due to the context in
<br>
which the information was found.
<br>
<br>
Although, despite that, either decision in the hands of those with an
<br>
axe to grind will use it to justify just that.
<br>
<br>
So it's unfortunate that this person has put us in a position where
<br>
every choice exposes us to risks and challenges to character.
<br>
<br>
So, my heart leans towards refusing the check with a polite letter and a
<br>
copy of a libertarian book in hopes this person does truly get to the
<br>
right place internally and to not push away any genuine evolutions this
<br>
person may have had.
<br>
<br>
My brain on the other hand, it doesn't sit well with me the idea of
<br>
people weaponizing that action against other members.
<br>
<br>
So while not a very conclusive opinion I hope this thought process is
<br>
helpful in some way in making the final decision.
