Hello All . . .

In response to my request for comments concerning convention planning, I
have received the following pertinent comment. As I am unaware of who will
be on the convention planning committees for this term, I provide this to
you all:

My only opinion on this is that the whole schedule preceding the convention
should be moved up by about three months. Memorial day weekend it fine, but
the rest is too late. Here's why.

The attendees need to decide whether to attend and then plan ahead. They
need to know where the convention is, and what the schedule is, and what the
events are, and who is going to speak on what - months in advance. There's
an equation that goes on in the heads of attendees - what's it going to
cost, can I afford the time, and what are the benefits of attending. And
they need some time to figure it out. Then it has to be figured out in time
to get decent air rates and hotel rates.

This last year that didn't happen. As a state chair I do my best to drum up
enthusiasm for the convention. But, it's hard to get people excited to go to
a convention when they don't know anything of the particulars, and after
they learn the particulars there's no time to make reasonable arrangements.
Folks would ask me for schedules and agendas, etc., and all I could tell
them was 'sometime soon'. This has to change.

So, my recommendation again. Get the venue, speakers, events, and logistical
details done 3 months earlier so they can get to the potential attendees in
time for rational decision making and planning.
