I thought this ad was pretty good. However, I don't even pretend to be a
media consultant.
So, I took the liberty of forwarding this link to Chad Crow. Chad and his
wife are libertarian-Republican political consultants.
Here is what they wrote. I hope Mr. Olsen forwards this to the Umbehr
campaign.
Please note that I am not trying to dis the Umbehr campaign. Note the part
that I made red below.
I just want to point out that it would be really, really neat if all or even
most of our state level nominees were willing and able to afford political
consultants.
Mr. Olsen - I hope you are able to forward this to the Umbehr campaign.

"I'm guessing it's web only because it's :60 instead of :30, but in Kansas
TV might be cheap enough to afford :60's. I don't know.
The ad is so-so. They should have invested a few bucks in professional
voice talent for the narration. That makes a world of difference and only
costs a couple of hundred bucks to get high quality voices. I'd also have
put him on screen when it got to his part instead of just his voice with
further still shots.
I'm going to take a guess and say that someone just created this with
Windows Movie Maker or something like that on their laptop with a mic, a
couple of friends, snapshots and a stock background track from a royalty
free stock music site. Sounds like he has a cool story. Would be nice if
it was told a bit more dynamically. For the web, I'll give it a B, but if I
were to invest any real money in air time, I'd first spend a couple of bucks
creating something that's going to grab people. It can still be folksy and
down home, but at times this is really slow and drags quite a bit. You
could edit that down into a :30 with no problem because there's a lot of
excess material in there that is not needed to communicate the same message.
But if the production budget was $0, then it's pretty good overall.
Here are a couple of folksy bio style ads to give you an idea of what I
mean. One is a :30 and one is a :60. Doesn't have to be flashy, but the
narrative needs to be pretty tight or you lose people. On a shoestring
budget, the second one could actually be done entirely with still shots.
It's the music, the script and the storytelling quality of the voice that
draws you in, not the live action.

That's my $.02. Share as you see fit.
