Hello Wes,
I hope this finds you well.
I recently purchased and read your book "Introduction To The Libertarian
Party" and wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed it! The book was
both very interesting and informative.
I sincerely appreciated your concise and well written explanation of the
Libertarian Party platform and its structure. As you mentioned, before
your book there was no LP resource readily available that detailed all
of the components that make up the party, including how the state
affiliates participate, how to volunteer and how to eventually run for
office should an individual choose to do so. Your book cleared up a lot
of misconceptions and assumptions that I had about the LP and its
platform and left me feeling much more comfortable and confident in the
parties beliefs, goals and objectives.
Like many Americans, I have grown increasingly troubled and anxious with
the destructive direction that the other two major political parties
have put our country in over recent years both in regard to our civil
liberties and finances. As a long time Republican supporter, I had
researched the Libertarian Party several times over the past 15 years as
a possible new home, but never felt that I fully understood the platform
enough to make the switch, even though every political test I took
scored me a Libertarian (to my surprise)!
The important take-away from your book for me was the realization of
just how much the two major political parties have abandoned the
principals of our founding fathers and the Constitution, and that I have
been unknowingly supporting the wrong party for many years.
From what I can tell, the Libertarian Party is made up of genuinely
honest, hard-working Americans who love their country and want to
protect the core beliefs and principals for which it was founded.
I believe most American's side with the Libertarian platform on some
level. This should have helped the LP grow faster over the years but I
attribute the slow growth to two things: A basic misunderstanding of
what the LP is all about (I actually thought it was more radical), and
that Americans have become complacent with the two-party system and have
accepted that this is the way it has to be because they believe they
can't change it. I believe people just don't realize the extent of how
much the government has taking away our liberties and money so far, and
that will continue to do so if we don't change course soon. I am sure
you will agree that its going to have a very negative affect on our
future generations of Americans.
Sorry to get on my soapbox! In closing, I wanted to let you know that
thanks to your book (and the efforts you have made in the past to the
LP), I have decided to join and support the Libertarian Party! You're
book made it clear that the Libertarian Party has made significant and
positive changes at the local and state levels of government over the
years that otherwise wouldn't have occurred. It has been a slow but
steady growth process and the fact that the LP has been able to stay
active and relevant since 1971 tells me its role is important. Now that
I better understand that volunteer process and areas I can help, I plan
to get more involved and take the time to clearly explain the LP's
message to family, friends and colleagues which hopefully will lead to
more new members. Like you and other LP members, I have a full-time job
and family and make a modest living. I would say I am just your average
American..or Libertarian!
Thanks again Wes!
Kind Regards,
-Bill Somerville (New Jersey)

Bill,
That's one of the kindest notes about my book I've ever received. Thank
you so much, and thank you for joining the Libertarian Party.
Now I have to ask you three questions:
1. How did you find out about my book and where did you purchase it?
2. Can I share you comments with others?
3. If you allow me to share your comments with others, do you prefer I
include your name, or exclude it and refer to something like "A new
libertarian from New Jersey"?
Thanks again, and I'm glad my book helped you decide to join the LP and
become active.

Hello Wes,
Thank you for your reply and you are welcome! I forgot to mention that
your passion for the Libertarian Party really came through in your book.
It was very inspirational and I hope to promote and support the LP with
the same level of energy and enthusiasm. I have already purchased some
promotional items from the web site which I plan to distribute on a
regular basis. As you mentioned, most LP members volunteer their time
and money to help bring awareness to the party and I plan to do my part.
Now to your questions below. I discovered and purchased your book
searching Amazon for Libertarian resources.I am OK with you sharing my
comments with others and don't have a problem with you using my name if
you feel it will be helpful. I approve of this format: Bill Somerville -
New Jersey.
Thanks again for your reply and I look forward to our future
correspondence, and perhaps meeting you personally one day.
Kind Regards,
-Bill
