Colleagues,
This proposal makes me uncomfortable.
As a minor quibble, I don’t see this as Affiliate Support (“Develop and support state and county affiliate parties”); it might be more in the nature of Outreach (“Initiatives to reach the general public and outside groups”).
That’s minor. I have a more substantive concern.
I could understand proposing to spend money that would improve the general welfare of all of our state parties, or if this was a mutual aid situation, where one state party was being adversely and disproportionately impacted by state law, such as in the case of ballot access restrictions.
If we wanted to, say, support the LP of Washington at their state fair, because that is where they must gather the signatures to get Johnson/Weld on the ballot, I could see the argument for that.
However, that is not what is happening here. This seems more like a transfer of money from the national party’s donors to the LP of Colorado. Our donors gave to us to support our national efforts. If our donors wanted to support the LP of Colorado’s programs, they are already free to do so by donating directly to the LP of Colorado.
Should the role of all regional representatives be to make similar requests? It seems to me that the arguments for supporting events in our respective regions would have just as much merit, and we can often argue the national benefits of doing so. For example, the Libertarian Party of California is staffing a booth at the California State Fair from July 8 – 24. That fair had almost 580,000 paid attendees in 2015. I am certain there are people from outside the state who attend. Why would that event be any less worthy of support than the current proposal?
