If I remember correctly, and the locals can correct me if this has changed, you have two choices with the Metro. You can get a paper farecard to purchase the fare to your destination. Or you can buy a plastic SmarTrip card, which costs $10 and comes with $8 fares loaded. The SmarTrip card fares are cheaper than using the paper card. If you're riding Metro only a couple of times, the paper card may be cheaper. If you're planning on sightseeing to DC and making additional LNC meetings to Alexandria, then splurging for the SmarTrip card may be cheaper.
