[Lnc-business] MOTION: Update Liberty Links page on our website

Starchild,

I will be glad to cosponsor your motion. Your due diligence comments make
sense to me and are consistent with the big tent LP paradigm and George
Phillies' LNC Affinity Group Support Committee (AGSC) proposal.

Based on your judgement subject to our personal due diligence, I am sure
that most if not all the organizations on your list will pass an appropriate
litmus test. I prefer to use the litmus test of "liberty-friendly" as being
more specific to our cause than the more common terms "affinity" and
"solidarity" that are industry-wide but might have uncomfortable personal
connotations for some. It is hard to argue with "liberty-friendly" as an
acceptable litmus test to most Libertarians.

As you point out, the list you provided is not set in stone. I am sure that
we can come up with an innovative two-round ranking selection process that
encourages write-in additions and allows for the exclusion of any proposed
liberty-friendly groups that are objectionable to some of us.

Thanks for your question David. I expect many if not most of the
groups on the list will be at least somewhat familiar to most LNC members,
so it's probably not the case that anyone would need to visit 35 separate
websites in order to have a passing familiarity with the list.

Remember also that these are just weblinks which can readily be
removed again if some issue were to come to our attention that made a group
beyond the pale from a libertarian perspective. This is not about sending
them money or even giving any formal statement of endorsement. I'm also not
sure that the 25 groups already listed on our site have had any LNC vetting
whatsoever (not that I have any concerns about any of them).

Of course I don't agree with every single position taken,
article published, etc., by every group, on either our current list of 25 or
my list of 35 proposed additions, and other LNC members probably won't
either (e.g. GOA has often endorsed Republican candidates, the Niskanen
Center supports the anthropogenic theory of climate change and recommends a
global carbon tax as a way to address it, the Mises Institute has published
articles advocating restrictions on immigration, etc.) - but then how many
of us always agree with everything the LP itself says or does either?

On the whole, I will vouch for these groups and sites as
pro-freedom organizations doing good and important work spreading
libertarian ideas and advancing libertarian goals. So while I would
encourage anyone who is unfamiliar with or has doubts about a particular
group to check out their site, do a quick websearch, ask around, etc., I
wouldn't stress too much if you don't have time to do so. If we vote to add
the names and you later become aware of some issue with a group serious
enough from a libertarian perspective that it outweighs the good they are
doing for the cause and we wouldn't want to be in any way associated with
them, by all means bring it up so we can have their link removed.

This particular list is not set in stone either, of course. I
tried to come up with a list that was balanced in terms of representing a
range of different issues, different types of groups, not exclusively
radical libertarian by any means, but certainly with those views
represented. However I'm open to further additions or removals. I do think
the bar for representing the Libertarian Party as a candidate for public
office should be set higher than the bar for having a link on the LP website
though - again these are just links, not people explicitly acting in the
name of the party. So unless you would consider it a no-brainer for the LP
to censure or boycott a candidate running as a Libertarian who took some
particular stance or action, it would not make any sense in my opinion to
reject a group's inclusion here for taking that stance or action.

Starchild,

I like the direction you are going on this proposal. How would you suggest
that we go about due diligence on the long list of organizations that you
are proposing for approval by the LNC?

One cool feature which has been on <http://LP.org> LP.org for a few
years now but which looks better on the new site is the Liberty Links page -
<https://www.lp.org/liberty-links/> https://www.lp.org/liberty-links/ -
which can be found by clicking on that title under the "Contact" header
found at the bottom of each page on the site.

Like the story on Save Scranton currently on the front page of
<http://LP.org> LP.org that I mentioned in another recent post, linking to
other pro-freedom organizations and websites is an important affirmation of
our status as the Party of Principle - a party that isn't just another
political party, but part of a larger libertarian movement which is made up
of an ever-growing number of organizations and people in the United States
and around the world who are fighting for freedom and with whom we stand in
solidarity.

However while our movement continues to grow, the number of fellow
traveler organizations linked from our site has remained about the same
since the feature was added in December 2010, going from 18 listings then to
just 25 listings currently. [Thanks to the Internet Archive by the way for
making this and so much other historical data about our site and many other
websites available - see
<https://web.archive.org/web/20100601000000*/http:/www.LP.org>
https://web.archive.org/web/20100601000000*/http://www.LP.org ]

I propose we expand our listings to reflect the growing freedom
movement by adding links to the following 35 additional groups and
informational resources, including many prominent movement sites that have
been too long overlooked, to bring our total number of linked sites to 60 (a
round number, divisible by four to nicely fit the formatting of the new
site), and request co-sponsors for this motion.

---------------------------------

While our listing of libertarian-oriented groups active in the United
States or worldwide will remain far from comprehensive with these additions,
I believe adding the above groups and sites will showcase the scope and
diversity of the freedom movement and help visitors to <http://LP.org>
LP.org explore the movement and increase their understanding of and support
for libertarian ideas.

I expect that these groups and websites, especially the less-visited
ones, will also appreciate the new traffic they get via our site, and be
more favorably disposed toward the Libertarian Party as a result. But as
with the article on Scranton Saves, that is not the main reason I believe we
should do this. Expressing our solidarity with others in the libertarian
movement is simply the right thing to do.
