[Lnc-business] MOTION: Update Liberty Links page on our website

Thanks for your question David. I expect many if not most of the groups on the list will be at least somewhat familiar to most LNC members, so it's probably not the case that anyone would need to visit 35 separate websites in order to have a passing familiarity with the list.

Remember also that these are just weblinks which can readily be removed again if some issue were to come to our attention that made a group beyond the pale from a libertarian perspective. This is not about sending them money or even giving any formal statement of endorsement. I'm also not sure that the 25 groups already listed on our site have had any LNC vetting whatsoever (not that I have any concerns about any of them).

Of course I don't agree with every single position taken, article published, etc., by every group, on either our current list of 25 or my list of 35 proposed additions, and other LNC members probably won't either (e.g. GOA has often endorsed Republican candidates, the Niskanen Center supports the anthropogenic theory of climate change and recommends a global carbon tax as a way to address it, the Mises Institute has published articles advocating restrictions on immigration, etc.) – but then how many of us always agree with everything the LP itself says or does either?

On the whole, I will vouch for these groups and sites as pro-freedom organizations doing good and important work spreading libertarian ideas and advancing libertarian goals. So while I would encourage anyone who is unfamiliar with or has doubts about a particular group to check out their site, do a quick websearch, ask around, etc., I wouldn't stress too much if you don't have time to do so. If we vote to add the names and you later become aware of some issue with a group serious enough from a libertarian perspective that it outweighs the good they are doing for the cause and we wouldn't want to be in any way associated with them, by all means bring it up so we can have their link removed.

This particular list is not set in stone either, of course. I tried to come up with a list that was balanced in terms of representing a range of different issues, different types of groups, not exclusively radical libertarian by any means, but certainly with those views represented. However I'm open to further additions or removals. I do think the bar for representing the Libertarian Party as a candidate for public office should be set higher than the bar for having a link on the LP website though – again these are just links, not people explicitly acting in the name of the party. So unless you would consider it a no-brainer for the LP to censure or boycott a candidate running as a Libertarian who took some particular stance or action, it would not make any sense in my opinion to reject a group's inclusion here for taking that stance or action.

Love & Liberty,

[Thanks to the Internet Archive by the way for making this and so much other historical data about our site and many other websites available – see https://web.archive.org/web/20100601000000*/http://www.LP.org ]

But as with the article on Scranton Saves, that is not the main reason I believe we should do this. Expressing our solidarity with others in the libertarian movement is simply the right thing to do.
