[Lnc-business] Email Ballot 2017-03: Cuban Arrests

Caryn Ann, thank you for your well thought out vote based on principle. It puzzles me when Libertarians let bureaucratic timidity get in the way of a spirited vocal moral defense of Libertarian activists. These two dissidents have obviously been illegally detained with lack of due process by a gang of statist thugs with a long history of human rights abuses propped up by “ends justify the means” propaganda smoke screens. Our government, dysfunctional as it may be, should certainly be putting pressure on the Cuban government to release these two Libertarians.
I fail to understand how bureaucratic obfuscation furthers our Libertarian agenda and who personally benefits from it. This motion presents a simple fundamental moral choice. It is not rocket science that requires an extended ethical and policy debate delaying tactic. It strikes me as a carefully crafted no-brainer statement of principle and outrage that deserves an equally well-articulated response by individual LNC voting members rather than muddying the waters with timid bureaucratic obfuscation. Libertarianism is not for the intellectual and ethical faint of heart. It is time for individual Libertarians and LNC members to break away from the pack and speak out boldly on our principles instead of fearfully hiding behind institutional skirts.
Thoughts?

I change my abstain vote back to yes. Having read the information I believe this is a right stand. Asking for diplomatic intervention is not against our principles. There is no evidence of violent wrongdoing and when people are arrested by the state we should expect some - and this in a country with a government that has a history of human rights abuses. For us to get squeamish about standing up for human rights is not just. IF they have done something wrong, let it be exposed in the light of day - not this night time spiriting away and lack of process and open information.

I hold many of the same reservations as Mr. Katz, and I'm still unclear of all the facts here.

I would vote for a version that made less accusations ,and demanded (and called on the State Department to help procure) information about the arrests. I will offer such a version, should this one fail.

We have an electronic mail ballot.
Votes are due to the LNC-Business list by February 24, 2017 at 11:59:59pm Pacific time.
Co-Sponsors: Starchild, Harlos, Demarest, Vohra
Motion: The Libertarian National Committee condemns the unjust detention of libertarian activists Ubaldo Herrera Hernandez and Manuel Velasquez by agents of the Castro regime in Cuba on February 2, and demands the immediate safe release of these political prisoners who were targeted for their peaceful activism promoting limited government and free markets. We further ask the U.S. government's State Department to place diplomatic pressure on the Castro regime for their release, and encourage Libertarian Party members and supporters to contact their elected officials toward that end.
