[Lnc-business] Executive Director Search

I am forwarding below a message from Starchild. While I do not concur
fully with Starchild, I concur more than I don't, and I have another point
to add. At first it was that the chair would do the search and then others
were added, and then when we tried to get more transparency we were shut
down by saying this is an EPC issue but there are people in the loop that
are not on that committee and not officers and not even Ex Comm members.
This isn't right.
Now from Starchild:
Is it only candidates seeking "senior positions" for whom the chair is
suggesting we bend over and compromise our commitment to transparency in
this manner?
Consider that not just someone applying for a "senior position", but
someone applying for *ANY* position with the LP, including serving as a
convention delegate, might have similar reasons for not wanting it publicly
known that they are considering such a new position or time commitment.
Partners, employers, family members, or others to whom an LP member with
limited resources has commitments might be pissed if they find out that
member is seeking to attend an LP convention, with the significant outlay
of time and money that attendance would entail.
For that matter, I guess we shouldn't be publicly welcoming new members
either, since some individuals might not want it known that they have
joined the Libertarian Party out of fear of negative economic, social, or
other repercussions in their lives! And taking this misguided logic a step
further, some LP candidates might not want it known that they are running
on the Libertarian ticket, so I guess we should refrain from mentioning
their names in our communications without their express permission!
I hope the above examples make clear that to apply this standard for
secrecy to applicants for internal party office fairly and consistently
would be counter-productive and self-defeating. This message is *NOT* a
call to keep the identity of committee applicants, delegates, candidates,
or others secret!
Granting special levels of privacy only to those seeking the
best-compensated positions, however, strikes me as not only
anti-transparency, but as class-based (anti-poverty) discrimination, and I
urge the LNC to avoid such an approach like the plague.
It is my strong view that the interests of the party and its members in
having information about who is being considered for party leadership or
decision-making positions made available to the membership on a timely
basis outweighs virtually all such considerations based on personal
circumstances.
However if LNC members want to leave the door open to consider unusual
special circumstances, I suggest you put out the information that those
applying for LP leadership roles can request privacy if they have a rare
personal situation that particularly warrants it, and document this in
writing. Then the LNC (or a subcommittee) can take up such requests on a
case-by-case basis.
Love & Liberty,
((( starchild )))
