Joshua,

Broad messaging guidelines can be handled by the LNC- and should be.
However, I found that your examples did not provide a complete picture.
And I think it is a solution looking for a problem.

*The “urgent-gram” *:The APRC doesn’t just check for rules violations as
you know. It also checks for possible denigration of image of the Party
and should have caught that. The fact that the LNC might not like a
decision of the APRC doesn’t indicate a need to form a new committee that
removes that job from the LNC or the APRC. It means perhaps the LNC needs
to issue some “image of the Party” guidelines to the APRC - or just realize
that sometimes there will be disagreements and imperfect humans make
imperfect decisions. There is no need to create "turtles all the way down."

*The FB meme*: I do not think that portrayed what happened completely. The
suggestion was that we “Don’t need any more Clintons, Bushs, or Pauls” -
and was seen as a slam on Ron by libertarians - and not solely an issue of
whether or not libertarians should vote for Rand (I think it is obvious
that the Party will not be promoting voting for a Presidential candidate
who is not the Libertarian candidate) - the issue with including Rand was
that many people felt it was egregious to compare Rand to a Clinton or a
Bush. I remember that situation quite well. Further the meme was
inaccurate as it was referring to prior people who were elected (a prior
Clinton and a prior Bush and thus not needing another one of those) and
equated that to a Paul as if Ron were previously elected. And all THAT
should have been caught by the APRC. That would not have been solved by any
additional committee as the “policing” of that would still be APRC. The
bad juju should have been obvious, and it was a slipping through the cracks
of something that should have been caught, and no additional committee
would have prevented that. Here is an article by a site that was pro-Rand
at the time: https://alibertarianfuture.com/big-government/propaganda/the-
libertarian-party-attacked-rand-paul-libertarians-attacked-back/ However,
FB is high volume and the way to review it is somewhat clunky, and things
like that may occasionally happen.

The staff is given feedback. Through the APRC as set up. We HAVE a
messaging gatekeeper already. The APRC is set up to do just that, and if
broad messaging guidelines need to be promulgated, let’s do it. Part of
the issue as I see it, is that we have more responsibilities than can be
handled in quarterly meetings, and the email list is inefficient for some
things, and ignored by some members of the committee for whatever reason -
reason isn’t relevant when we are just dealing with reality. If the LNC
needs to provide more direction on things like this, we should set up an
electronic special meeting to do so and take care of it as the quarterly
meetings are already quite full.

If the LNC needs to issue messaging guidelines, let the LNC do it. That is
OUR job - and ultimately - the Chair who sets the tone and messaging during
his/her tenure.
