[Lnc-business] Seeking Co-Sponsors: Motion to set the September Meeting Location

To clarify, no one was uncivil YET, tho it pushed the limits from a few, again including myself.
So that was more of a "hey let's not let it go there" rather than it was already there.  I apologize for the implied criticism, it was unintended.

I just saw Starchild's original email to Ernest.  This meeting is proposed to be held on the patio.  No tables.  We would have to rent all that.
And then he opined, well, we should just be willing to all sit on the lawn (no chairs) under a shady tree.
After having put up with this nonsense for hours and hours and years and years, it is so old.
I don't think I was uncivil to him.  It is symptomatic though of a culture we have that has unconfronted and unintended huge negatives for women.

At this point I would say the case is made to not take advantage of the offer at this time.
I will not be taking away from Starchild's valid concerns about cost, cheaper options are usually worth at least looking at.
I will also not take away from everyone's valid concerns about the other issues.
The wisest statement here was about penny wise, pound foolish.  There is a cost/benefit analysis to everything.
Which is why I asked for an actual cost.  I expect that the actual cost is somewhere in the middle of the options I have been presented.  This is not an argument for this particular instance, in my mind that is already settled as a resounding no.  It is merely an attempt to address valid questions brought by our membership, and not just Starchild, about expenditures and if there is an option for cheaper.
I spent more than 2 decades in the hospitality industry, and "free" use of a room is not really free, just like anything else that is claimed to be free.  For example at the recent convention the price of food and drinks was astronomical compared to what was readily available locally.  So looking at that cost/benefit is a valid concern.
I understand the frustration of dealing with questions you feel have already been dealt with, but SEVERAL of us are new here and have not taken part.  So please keep that in mind, and let's all (including me admittedly) try to keep a more civil tone. At least on list.

Most people don't realize that Sam. And perhaps we should put out a
donation jar.

When Starchild responded and said this is *really* about some obsessive
desire to be professional, no it isn't, but hey, if it was, I have no issue
with that. I want us to be professional. Why? Because it is effective.
I submit that there is an obsessive need to be anti-professional as well as
somehow that is "f*ck respectability politics." That is a shallow view of
that. Being a contrarian for the sake of it when it isn't serving a
purpose is just being ineffective.

Business meetings are effective when conducted in a professional
environment. If that statement is controversial to any reader, we don't
live in the same world with the same colour sky.

Putting aside the issues I brought up earlier, this simply makes it more
expensive for LNC members who already are sacrificing a great deal. We
shouldn't be making it more prohibitive than it already is and more
disruptive to lives than necessary.

We are talking extra food for working lunches, money for ubers etc, and I
guess I am supposed to buy a cooler every meeting. I guess I do that at
3am since I often fly in on red eyes for the cheapest flights. And that is
an uber to the supermarket. And leave it behind....

As far as insurance, I didn't mean it for the *person* but for the
*party.* Homeowners insurance is not intended to cover those sorts of
things, and depending on the policy, it might be excluded. Are we willing
to put kind-hearted party members through that? So for this situations, I
think the Party would have to buy a short term liability policy. That's
probably about $150 - at least we get food out of the other expenditures.
(though perhaps a cheap or no extra cost rider could be added to the
current policy)

There is also a very definite loss to business. How so? Having the
meeting at the hotel encourages everyone to stay there or at least gather
there so after the meeting it is natural for all of us to go out together
and more team-building that helps business gets done then. This travel to
some off site location and then us scattered in our various hotels isolates
us from each other.

This is what I meant by penny wise and pound foolish. The *cost* is
actually higher.

The unintended consequences are large.

A haiku to the Statement of Principles:

   donation jar.
When Starchild responded and said this is *really* about some obsessive
desire to be professional, no it isn't, but hey, if it was, I have no
issue with that. I want us to be professional. Why? Because it is
effective. I submit that there is an obsessive need to be
anti-professional as well as somehow that is "f*ck respectability
politics." That is a shallow view of that. Being a contrarian for the
sake of it when it isn't serving a purpose is just being ineffective.
Business meetings are effective when conducted in a professional
environment. If that statement is controversial to any reader, we
don't live in the same world with the same colour sky.
Putting aside the issues I brought up earlier, this simply makes it
more expensive for LNC members who already are sacrificing a great
deal. We shouldn't be making it more prohibitive than it already is
and more disruptive to lives than necessary.
We are talking extra food for working lunches, money for ubers etc, and
I guess I am supposed to buy a cooler every meeting. I guess I do that
at 3am since I often fly in on red eyes for the cheapest flights. And
that is an uber to the supermarket. And leave it behind....
As far as insurance, I didn't mean it for the *person* but for the
*party.* Homeowners insurance is not intended to cover those sorts of
things, and depending on the policy, it might be excluded. Are we
willing to put kind-hearted party members through that? So for this
situations, I think the Party would have to buy a short term liability
policy. That's probably about $150 - at least we get food out of the
other expenditures. (though perhaps a cheap or no extra cost rider
could be added to the current policy)
There is also a very definite loss to business. How so? Having the
meeting at the hotel encourages everyone to stay there or at least
gather there so after the meeting it is natural for all of us to go out
together and more team-building that helps business gets done then.
This travel to some off site location and then us scattered in our
various hotels isolates us from each other.
This is what I meant by penny wise and pound foolish. The *cost* is
   actually higher.
   The unintended consequences are large.

     John,
There is no reason to rent a space for a LNC meeting. Typically we
use a hotel board room for the meeting at no little or no cost to
the party as long as we buy food (usually a lunch) and have a
certain number of hotel rooms used by participants. You
can always chip in for a part of the cost of the lunch to offset
     that cost.
We are asking LNC members to travel across the country at their own
expense for travel and lodging. I doubt most dues paying
members of the party would begrudge the expense of a meal every 3-4
months for those doing the party's business.

determination as to whether this venue will suffice.
I believe many of these concerns are implicitly answered by reading
   the
email Starchild copied us on where he laid out our requirements. I
   have
also asked Mr Hancock Whitney's questions and will await his
   response
      before asking more.
Tim, Starchild did mention wifi in his initial inquiry and because
   Mr
Hancock did not explicitly state his capabilities, I will be asking
      this question.
Hotels in Arizona are fairly cheap, in general and provided you
   aren't
looking for 5 star. I regularly am staying in one throughough the
Phoenix area and find the price range to be slightly better than
average when compared to traveling outside of the state. The average
Hampton Inn is right around $100-$110 as price point. I typically
   stay
in Choice Brands and pay an average of $60 a night. I will attempt
   to
find out the specific area and advise further. Remember, due to
temperatures, this is the tail end of our slow season.
The question of transport is fair, however, I note that many on the
   LNC
will need to transport wherever we are meeting anyway. Whether that
   is
from the airport to the hotel and we meet in the hotel or something
else. If it could save our membership hundreds, if not thousands, by
not renting out a space, I think it is worth at least a
   consideration
before rejecting the idea completely and not rejecting on a free
   offer
at face value. I have a car and am willing to pack it like sardines
   to
save you an uber or lyft, if that is your concern.

Sam, thank you for your consideration and vote prior to getting
        the

        you have
quesitons or concerns, please ask them so that we may get the
        answers.
I also ask that you do not blankedtly dismiss this or any idea
        prior to
having an opportunity to address the concerns and make a proper
determination as to whether this venue will suffice.
I believe many of these concerns are implicitly answered by
        reading the
email Starchild copied us on where he laid out our
   requirements.
        I have
also asked Mr Hancock Whitney's questions and will await his
        response
           before asking more.
Tim, Starchild did mention wifi in his initial inquiry and
        because Mr
Hancock did not explicitly state his capabilities, I will be
        asking
           this question.
Hotels in Arizona are fairly cheap, in general and provided you
        aren't
looking for 5 star. I regularly am staying in one throughough
   the
Phoenix area and find the price range to be slightly better
   than
average when compared to traveling outside of the state. The
        average
Hampton Inn is right around $100-$110 as price point. I
   typically
        stay
in Choice Brands and pay an average of $60 a night. I will
        attempt to
find out the specific area and advise further. Remember, due to
temperatures, this is the tail end of our slow season.
The question of transport is fair, however, I note that many on
        the LNC
will need to transport wherever we are meeting anyway. Whether
        that is
from the airport to the hotel and we meet in the hotel or
        something
else. If it could save our membership hundreds, if not
   thousands,
        by
not renting out a space, I think it is worth at least a
        consideration
before rejecting the idea completely and not rejecting on a
   free
        offer
at face value. I have a car and am willing to pack it like
        sardines to
save you an uber or lyft, if that is your concern.

I just saw Starchild's original email to Ernest. This meeting is
proposed to be held on the patio. No tables. We would have to rent
   all that.
And then he opined, well, we should just be willing to all sit on the
lawn (no chairs) under a shady tree.
After having put up with this nonsense for hours and hours and years
and years, it is so old.
I don't think I was uncivil to him. It is symptomatic though of a
culture we have that has unconfronted and unintended huge negatives for
   women.

I will also not take away from everyone's valid concerns about the
   other issues.
The wisest statement here was about penny wise, pound foolish. There
is a cost/benefit analysis to everything.
Which is why I asked for an actual cost. I expect that the actual cost
is somewhere in the middle of the options I have been presented. This
is not an argument for this particular instance, in my mind that is
already settled as a resounding no. It is merely an attempt to address
valid questions brought by our membership, and not just Starchild,
about expenditures and if there is an option for cheaper.
I spent more than 2 decades in the hospitality industry, and "free" use
of a room is not really free, just like anything else that is claimed
to be free. For example at the recent convention the price of food and
drinks was astronomical compared to what was readily available
locally. So looking at that cost/benefit is a valid concern.
I understand the frustration of dealing with questions you feel have
already been dealt with, but SEVERAL of us are new here and have not
taken part. So please keep that in mind, and let's all (including me
admittedly) try to keep a more civil tone.

*We defend your rights*
*And oppose the use of force*
*Taxation is theft*

Most people don't realize that Sam. And perhaps we should put out a
   donation jar.
When Starchild responded and said this is *really* about some obsessive
desire to be professional, no it isn't, but hey, if it was, I have no
issue with that.

I would however be curious as to the cost of renting a space, and

And to preempt Starchild's always rebuttal. "But what about those
   Friday
night parties?" A party is a totally different context and is
   OPTIONAL. I
go there were several members of the LNC that I know well, there is
   zero
chance for conflict, and it is very very short term, a couple of hours
   at
most. And each time so far, it has been someone I know. There may
   be a
time where I don't go to the Friday party.
Oh my word, I can just see us setting up a projector in someone's
   house.
Me dragging in a cooler of diet mountain dews and none of us wanting to
snack for fear of being too messy. And if someone just wants to leave,
rather than a polite excusal and out the door, one has to make a big
   show
of it and get an uber. And what about executive session? We ban
   guests to
the back yard? Stand in line for the toilet?
It is very very generous of the Hancock's to offer and NONE of this is
about them. My frustration is how my concerns have gone ignored by
Starchild for years and just brushed off. My frustration is that this
   a
real safety concern for female members of our Party and it is treated
   by
him like nothing. He knows my frustration at this.
Business for most people requires a business atmosphere. I understand
that Starchild is concerned about those uncomfortable in traditional
atmospheres. You can't please everyone. Ever. But I don't think
   keeping
a custom of business in a business conference room is so outrageous,
particularly considering the safety concerns that ladies who know none
   of
   us will have.

And to preempt Starchild's always rebuttal. "But what about those
Friday night parties?" A party is a totally different context and
   is
OPTIONAL. I go there were several members of the LNC that I know
   well,
there is zero chance for conflict, and it is very very short term, a
couple of hours at most. And each time so far, it has been
   someone
I know. There may be a time where I don't go to the Friday party.
Oh my word, I can just see us setting up a projector in someone's
house. Me dragging in a cooler of diet mountain dews and none of us
wanting to snack for fear of being too messy. And if someone just
wants to leave, rather than a polite excusal and out the door, one
   has
to make a big show of it and get an uber. And what about executive
session? We ban guests to the back yard? Stand in line for the
      toilet?
It is very very generous of the Hancock's to offer and NONE of this
   is
about them. My frustration is how my concerns have gone ignored by
Starchild for years and just brushed off. My frustration is that
   this
a real safety concern for female members of our Party and it is
   treated
by him like nothing. He knows my frustration at this.
Business for most people requires a business atmosphere. I
   understand
that Starchild is concerned about those uncomfortable in traditional
atmospheres. You can't please everyone. Ever. But I don't think
keeping a custom of business in a business conference room is so
outrageous, particularly considering the safety concerns that ladies
who know none of us will have.
